The Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition (BSS) is a powerful alliance of nine community-based organizations whose mission is to end the criminalization of young boys and men of color by creating public policy that invests in young people and their future. Founded in 2011, BSS has been at the forefront of advocating for transformative policies that address issues like school discipline reform, the school-to-prison pipeline, and youth criminalization throughout Los Angeles County. Through its collaboration with local partners, BSS empowers the rights and well-being of young men of color, particularly by advancing alternative solutions to punitive practices in schools and communities across Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The Coalition Director is appointed by and works closely with the BSS Anchor Organizations (InnerCity Struggle, Community Coalition, and Khmer Girls in Action) and coalition leaders to oversee the administration, organizing, campaigns, funder relationships and strategic plan of the coalition. This Director plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the strategic vision of BSS and requires a visionary and collaborative leader who can drive impactful policy reforms, oversee youth-driven/led campaigns, and cultivate a collective commitment to systemic change among diverse stakeholders. The Director will guide the coalition in assessing past achievements and develop a unified policy organizing platform that advances the coalitions’ purpose and mission. By aligning and amplifying the voices of the coalition partners and power building among boys and men of color, the Director will ensure that BSS remains a trusted and influential force in youth justice policymaking in LA County.
The successful candidate will lead a dedicated team of 5 organizers, manage BSS’s budget to ensure long term financial sustainability, and cultivate relationships with existing and potential funders. Within the first year, the Director will focus on developing a campaign agenda in partnership with coalition members, designing and implementing internal processes to streamline team collaboration, and boost youth-focused programs. In addition to leadership and advocacy, the Coalition Director will take an active role in fundraising, working closely with anchor organizations to raise an annual goal of $1M in support of BSS’s mission.
The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a nonprofit or advocacy-focused role, with demonstrated skills in team leadership, coalition building, and campaign development. A deep familiarity with LA’s social and policy landscape, especially issues impacting communities of color, is essential. Additionally, the Director should possess a demonstrated commitment to social justice, cultural competence, and a passion for supporting and uplifting marginalized youth. Experience in financial management, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement is highly valued, as well as the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, from youth leaders to policymakers, with clarity and shared purpose.
This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of youth advocacy in Los Angeles and drive impactful change in the lives of boys and young men of color. The position offers a starting salary of $75,000 to $90,000 annually, along with competitive benefits. We strongly encourage candidates with lived experience relevant to the communities we serve to apply. For the full leadership profile, click here.
