    OVERVIEW

    The Development Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial sustainability and growth of our community. This position involves strategic planning, fundraising, donor relations, and community engagement to support the synagogue's mission and programs. This position will help advance a diversified development program that is part of Temple's overall contributed revenue strategy.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    The following duties are not exhaustive but are meant to provide a good representation of the job. Other duties may be assigned, and responsibilities may change as needed to meet the needs of the organization and the community.

    Fundraising Strategy & Management (20%)

    • Strategic Planning: In partnership with the Director of Advancement, Senior Director of Capital Campaign and Major Gifts, and the Development Committee, design and execute comprehensive, growth-centered fundraising plans, including annual campaigns, tribute and memorial programs, major gifts, planned giving, and special events.
    • Prospect Pipeline: Using a data-driven process and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Capital Campaign and Major Gifts, identify a pipeline of prospects for Temple's primary major gifts program, capital campaign, and other targeted major gifts projects.
    • Financial Management: Monitor fundraising budgets, track progress, and report on outcomes.
    • Lay Leader Support: Attend Development Committee meetings and support lay leader engagement with fundraising efforts.
    • Marketing and Communications: Collaborate with the communications team to develop a calendar of donor-centered communications and supporting materials that demonstrate the need for, and impact, of philanthropic giving.

    Donor Relations (40%)

    • Draft and execute all donor communications, including but not limited to annual solicitation and gift acknowledgement letters, website giving pages, e-news, the honor roll and development content in Temple's quarterly print publication, annual impact report, and event collateral.
    • Manage and address all incoming donations and donor inquiries promptly and efficiently, ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are taken to maintain strong donor relationships.
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors, ensuring effective communication and stewardship.
    • Work closely with community members, volunteers, and staff to promote fundraising initiatives and enhance community involvement.
    • Plan and execute annual donor stewardship events (3 – fall, winter, spring)
    • Create project plan and budget in collaboration with Director of Advancement.
    • Develop event collateral, including invitations, signage, and programs.
    • Oversee work of all vendors, coordinating with the Event Manager for onsite events.

    Projects and Events (40%)

    Fall Annual Campaign

    • Collaborate with Director of Advancement to review and update annual case for giving.
    • Identify, qualify, and segment donors based on giving history.
    • Partner with Senior Director of Capital Campaign and Major Gifts to assign and prep solicitors.
    • Prepare program staff and lay leaders to steward donors.
    • Design communications plan in consultation with Marketing Manager. Oversee production and distribution of all campaign communications, including appeal and acknowledgment letters, email updates, articles, blog posts, videos, social posts, physical and digital collateral.
    • Track incoming gifts and generate acknowledgment letters. Inform solicitors of any major gifts received.
    • Measure and report on campaign progress to all stakeholders, including the advancement team, Temple staff, and leadership.

    Other Fundraising Programs

    • Sponsorship Program: Collaborate with Director of Advancement to grow event sponsorship program; identify and prepare volunteers to solicit all sponsors.
    • Grants: Collaborate with stakeholders to develop grant applications for eligible programs and infrastructure (4 grant proposals submitted per year on average).
    • Corporate Matching: Manage corporate matching program by crafting communications, overseeing donation processing, and creating annual reports for stakeholders.
    • Fundraising Events: Explore options for establishing and executing new fundraising events, ensuring they are well-planned and executed to maximize engagement and revenue.
    Requirements:

    EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    Temple will consider any combination of education and experience that provides a strong foundation for a person to be successful in the role.

    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree or certification in fundraising or non-profit management is a plus.
    • Minimum of 4 years in fundraising, development, or a related field, preferably within a non-profit or religious organization.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, strategic thinking, and proficiency in fundraising software and tools.
    • Passionate about Temple's mission.
    • Detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
    • Experience fully leveraging a CRM database, with ShulCloud experience preferred.
    • Access to a vehicle.
    • Understanding of Jewish life and culture preferred; knowledge of the local Jewish community a plus.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Physical Requirements

    • Sitting for extended periods: Most administrative tasks are performed at a desk.
    • Manual dexterity: Ability to use a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
    • Visual acuity: Ability to read and interpret documents, emails, and computer screens.
    • Hearing ability: Ability to communicate effectively via phone and in person.
    • Occasional lifting: Ability to lift and carry items such as files, documents, or office supplies, typically up to 10-20 pounds.
    • Mobility: Ability to move around the office to retrieve files, attend meetings, or assist colleagues. Moving throughout a building that is on many levels might be required.

    Work Environment

    • Office Setting: The role is primarily based in a professional office environment.
    • Flexible Hours: The role requires flexibility, with work often occurring during evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate services and special events.
    • Standard Hours: Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with occasional overtime as needed.
    • Community Engagement: Interaction with the congregation and community members is a key part of the job, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
    • Event Settings: Occasionally, the role may involve working at off-site locations for community events, concerts, or representing the synagogue at other venues.
    • Administrative Tasks: A significant amount of time will be spent on administrative duties, such as planning, budgeting, and coordinating with other staff members.
    • Collaborative Atmosphere: The position involves working closely with team members and other departments, fostering a collaborative and supportive work culture.
    • Technology-Driven: The role requires regular use of computers, office software, and other technology tools.
    • Quiet to Moderate Noise Level: The office environment typically has a quiet to moderate noise level, suitable for focused work.
    • Climate-Controlled: The workspace is climate-controlled, ensuring a comfortable temperature year-round.
    • Accessibility: The office is in an older building that may be difficult to navigate for people with mobility challenges.
    • Travel: The position requires travel within the city and travel between campuses.
