The Glimmerglass Festival (the Festival) seeks an ambitious and creative leader to serve as its next Director of Development, a role pivotal to shaping the future of one of the world’s most celebrated summer opera festivals. As the principal architect of the Festival’s comprehensive fundraising strategy, the Director of Development leads a collaborative team of five development professionals and serves as a key member of the senior executive team. Working closely with and reporting directly to the Artistic & General Director and acting as the principal liaison to the Board of Trustees, this leader is integral to long-term strategic planning and ensuring the Festival’s continued artistic excellence. The Director of Development oversees all aspects of fundraising, from cultivating existing supporters and identifying new revenue opportunities and donor prospects to orchestrating donor engagement events, an annual gala, and the timely submission of grant applications and sponsorship requests to foundations, corporations, and government entities. The Glimmerglass Festival is a professional non-profit summer opera company dedicated to producing new productions each season. Robert Ainsley was appointed Artistic & General Director in 2022. The company continues its tradition of four fully staged productions, now including three operas and one work of American musical theater, performed with full orchestra and large cast. These four productions are supplemented by special performances, cabarets, concerts, lectures and symposiums throughout the season. The company continues to attract an international audience to the scenic Cooperstown area, where the talent of singers, directors, designers and staff from around the world converges in the 918-seat Alice Busch Opera Theater to produce world-class opera and music theater. The Director of Development is expected to maintain and nurture strong relationships in the Cooperstown community with staff and donors, but will also concentrate significant effort on developing transformative funding relationships within the region, particularly in New York City. To that end, The Glimmerglass Festival will consider a residency model for the Director of Development that allows for a consistent presence in both Cooperstown and New York City. The company intends to make a hiring decision by the end of first quarter of 2025, with the selected candidate transitioning into the position shortly after that time.
