Education for the Children Foundation (EFTC) Volunteers

Here at The School of Hope in Jocotenango, Guatemala, we work hard to provide our students with access to education and experiences they would not otherwise be able to access. We work with not only our students but also their families to break the cycle of poverty through education and empowerment. We take a holistic approach and provide not only education but also nutritional support, health care and social support.

Although our team works hard to give our students as much opportunity as they can, there are some positions we do not have the funding, as an NGO, to provide. We are looking for some passionate people to volunteer for the below positions:

    • Teacher's Assistant (English or Spanish): Volunteers are placed with a particular teacher and grade throughout their stay. As a classroom assistant, you would prepare teaching materials, help with classroom management, assist with lessons, and work one-on-one with kids who need extra help.
    • Academic Tutor: Volunteers with a background in education can work as academic tutors for all grade levels. For ages 5-16, you can provide tutoring one-on-one or in small groups for students who need extra support. Volunteers who have experience working with older students and have academic expertise in a certain subject can provide tutoring to scholarship students who need support in their subjects or university courses.
    • English Tutor: If you want to work with students ages 7-15, you can help us give our primary and básico students the additional attention they need to improve their grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and general comfort in English. If you want to work with students ages 15-23, many of our scholarship students are studying careers that require a strong foundation for English. You can give these high school and university students the additional support to succeed. We prefer you to have prior experience working as an ESL tutor.
    • Administrative Assistant: As an Administrative Assistant, you would provide support to supervisors in various departments, including Outreach, Education, and Scholarship. This role involves answering phone calls, filing, photocopying, data entry, and other office duties. This role will teach you all about the innerworkings of different departments in a nonprofit organization. Prior administrative experience is preferred.
    • Development Intern: As a Development Intern you would provide administrative and operational support to our Outreach Team in Guatemala, in particular to the Fundraising and Administration Manager. This role will assist with outreach, data entry, fundraising, research, and grant writing efforts.
    • Communications Intern: As an international organization, we connect with our network through our social media, our website, and our email newsletters. This role includes writing pieces for our blog, creating promotional material, developing email blasts, and helping with photography.
    • Educational Leadership Intern: As an Education Leadership Intern you would help our education team is a myriad of ways. This role will assist in filling gaps within our education department. This includes everything from the administration and organization of our education department up to starting and independently running an after school club.

These are short term roles, with a minimum of either one to four weeks commitment depending on the position, that we would like to fill.

Level of Spanish: Varies depending on the position (e.g none to beginners for English Teachers assistant but conversational fluency/intermediate for other positions)

    Benefits:

    • Assistance in organizing a homestay and transportation from the airport
    • The opportunity to work in an international, multi-cultural environment
    • The opportunity to collaborate in the development of an organization working for the benefit of Guatemalan children
    • Letters of Recommendation

Hours: Same as full time staff.

Volunteer Fee: All international volunteers are asked for a one-time donation of $75 to cover the administrative costs of running the volunteer program.
