Position Summary:
The Safety Officer/First Aid Trainer is responsible for developing and implementing safety protocols across all athletic programs to ensure a secure and compliant environment for participants and staff. This role includes training coaches and volunteers on safety standards, maintaining first aid readiness, and overseeing emergency preparedness for events and activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Protocol Development & Implementation
- Design, develop, and regularly update safety protocols to align with organizational goals and local regulations.
- Implement best practices for injury prevention, emergency response, and safety compliance.
- Conduct routine safety audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and program activities to proactively identify and mitigate potential risks.
- First Aid Readiness & Emergency Preparedness
- Ensure that all athletic programs are equipped with appropriate first aid supplies and that these are checked and replenished regularly.
- Develop emergency response plans, communicate them to all staff, and conduct regular drills.
- Serve as the first point of contact during emergencies, providing guidance and coordinating first aid or emergency services as needed.
- Training & Development
- Train coaches, staff, and volunteers on first aid, CPR, and other essential safety standards.
- Facilitate workshops or refresher courses on injury prevention, emergency protocols, and participant safety.
- Develop training materials, guidelines, and checklists to ensure consistent adherence to safety standards.
- Risk Assessment & Incident Reporting
- Conduct risk assessments for all programs and special events, identifying and mitigating potential hazards.
- Maintain a log of incidents, near-misses, and injuries, conducting investigations as needed and documenting findings.
- Review and analyze incident reports to adjust safety protocols and improve overall risk management practices.
- Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as organizational policies.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive records of safety protocols, training sessions, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
- Communicate safety updates and policy changes to all staff and ensure consistent application across programs.
Preferred Qualifications/Nice to Have for Volunteers:
- A strong interest in health and safety practices, particularly in athletic or youth settings
- Volunteers who are already certified in First Aid and CPR are a great asset. However, we also offer training opportunities to obtain these certifications.
- Any previous experience with safety protocols, risk assessment, or emergency preparedness, even if informal, is a plus
- Experience working with groups or leading trainings.
- A calm and proactive approach during potential emergencies or high-stakes situations is highly valued, though we provide guidance and support for volunteers to grow in these areas.
