    Farming/Agriculture Volunteer opprotunities In Ghana

St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation is a recognized and registered non-profit/charity organisation that works to foster cross cultural understanding through travel and volunteer work experience in Ghana. Our volunteer programs are suitable for anyone on a gap year, career break or for anyone looking to do a short term volunteer program.

SMWEF provides safe, unique, flexible, meaningful and extremely affordable volunteer programs and non paid internships work experience in Ghana.

Volunteer to increase agricultural productivity through improved seeds and farming practices, improve access to markets so farmers can profitably sell their surplus food.

Many rural villages in Ghana rely on agriculture as their main economic activity, but they often struggle to produce sufficient food. SMWEF Volunteers, along with its dedicated local volunteers, play a vital role in addressing agricultural challenges and promoting sustainable practices in these communities. Additionally, volunteers actively participate in diverse projects that include vegetable gardening, livestock management, and nutrition education.

Volunteers involved in this project are afforded ample freedom to pursue their specific interests within the agricultural field. Whether their passion lies in genetics and breeding, agro-forestry and conservation, or fair trade practices, volunteers have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Food can be scarce for those in low-income communities in Ghana, and there is much to be gained by having it grown by local agriculturists. Volunteers can be a great help to farmers who need extra pairs of hands to scale their production and make their operations more efficient and sustainable. The focus of this project is to address the difficulties facing SMWEF’s Childcare projects in terms of providing a sustainable food source for the children. To support the placements where our Childcare volunteers work, the produce grown through the Agriculture project is donated to supplement the children’s diet.

As an Agriculture volunteer your tasks will depend on the season and your exact placement, which will be determined based on the needs of the local community. You should expect volunteer work to be physical and labor intensive. More experienced volunteers may be able to assist in developing the project and teaching new techniques to locals, helping them to farm their crops and animals more effectively.

    Farming volunteer work usually involves:

    • Helping with crops including corn, eggplants, capsicums and palms
    • Farming animals like pigs, rabbits, goats and chickens
    • Clearing and developing land for crops
    • Fertilizing, planting and nurturing crops
    • Teaching farming techniques to locals
    • Fencing
    • Assisting with purchasing, moving and caring for stock.

Work on the Agriculture project usually stops during the hottest period of the day. During the break you are able to help with other projects if you like.

This program is ideal for individuals interested in agriculture, food security, environmental science, natural resources, ecology, international development, and public health. The tasks assigned to volunteers vary depending on the project, season, and the specific needs of the individuals served by SMWEF Volunteers.

Volunteers actively engage in hands-on work that has a lasting impact on farming communities in need. They assist in various stages of the agricultural process, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the local agriculture scene and gain knowledge about sustainable farming methods and rural agricultural processes.
