Our clean, comfortable, and secure volunteer houses offer housing at $42-$49 (USD) per week, depending on your stay duration. Each house features a full kitchen for volunteers to prepare their meals. Typically, 4-7 international volunteers stay at each house.
We embrace diversity and welcome volunteers of all nationalities, races, genders, and religions to join Honduras Child Alliance. Ideally, volunteers should be 20+ years old, and we encourage long-term volunteers. The minimum volunteer period is 6 weeks, but many stay for 3-6 months or even a full year. We are flexible and can accommodate your preferred starting date.
HCA's educational enrichment projects are based in the community of El Porvenir, on the Honduras north coast. You will live and work next to the Caribbean Sea with pineapple fields surrounding us on three sides and mountain waterfalls and the cloud forest, just minutes to the south. While the beautiful village that houses our projects is semi-rural and poor, the small city of La Ceiba is only 20 minutes away. La Ceiba is a lively place with a mall, an open-air market, ATMs, inexpensive restaurants, and excellent medical care. La Ceiba has a modern airport (LCE), two bus stations, and more taxis than anyone can count! Honduras Child Alliance is community-based and small, but with the energy of devoted volunteers and community partners, together we are enriching lives and providing access to opportunities for children who would otherwise have none. Your work makes a difference at Honduras Child Alliance!
HCA volunteers cover their own traveling or incidental expenses and live in our comfortable and secure volunteer houses. On-site managers will train and support you. Volunteers enter Honduras on a tourist visa that should be renewed every 90 days.
Improve your Spanish! We have a team (social enterprise) of bilingual tutors from El Porvenir who provide conversational Spanish instruction through our online tutoring program, Convo-Amigos. Volunteers receive 5 free lessons ($35 value). You can start your lessons before arriving to El Porvenir or you can participate in person once you've arrived. Additional lessons can be purchased at https://honduraschildalliance.org/volunteering/convo-amigos-program or the Convo-Amigos Instagram page. Follow @convoamigos for free mini-Spanish lessons and opportunities to win free lessons!
The Porvenir Enrichment Program 'plus' (PEP+) focuses on: English & Spanish literacy, computer instruction, sexuality education, arts, nutrition, intro to science, sports and fitness, group skills/conflict resolution, and more! Our blended team of international volunteers, alongside our bilingual team of Honduran managers and interns, work together in a unified effort. We offer morning and afternoon classes in 3 locations, for a total of 9 groups (grades 1-6) a day. Most of our students are elementary-aged but teen classes are offered twice a week and there are also dedicated adult classes that meet 2 evenings per week. This project began in April 2010 and is ongoing.
Volunteers work morning and afternoon sessions with children on Monday through Thursday and also have class on Friday mornings. With 3 community-based classrooms, all within walking distance from the volunteer houses, our international volunteers and Honduran interns operate programs in teams of 2-3 instructors. There is a progressive curriculum but also plenty of room for creativity in how you choose to work with your groups. You're encouraged to teach with songs, movement, games, art, and other fun activities. PEP+ operates continuously from February through early November. So what do we do when we are not operating PEP+?
Vacation Activities Program (VAP)!
The Honduran school year starts in February and ends in early November. We seek volunteers who can make a commitment specifically for November, December & January for this “summer camp” style enrichment program for children at the 3 locations in El Porvenir. International volunteers and Honduran interns work together to develop an emotionally safe and respectful environment in which children can be curious and creative. Your focus is on literacy in Spanish and English, computers, environmental sustainability, and a variety of other subjects based on the expertise of the volunteer team. There’s always time for art, music, and sports, and also plenty of time to play!
Volunteers are welcome to stay for both PEP+ and VAP.
