ASH has 40+ locations across San Antonio where volunteers are needed. Our patients require kind individuals who can dedicate time to offering a listening ear and comforting presence during a very challenging phase of their lives. Prospective volunteers will be briefly interviewed and provided with training on site as part of the onboarding process. Our main requirement is that volunteers be 18 years or older.
The training is paced according to volunteers' availabilities and schedule, and you will begin by joining in visits by multiple members of our team, including a social worker, nurse, and chaplain, to understand the multifaceted nature of end-of-life patient care. This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking clinical volunteer hours and a deeper understanding of palliative care, while being able to have flexible arrangements. Because we have several locations, we can place you at a care center or home that is most convenient for you.
Your role will be tailored according to both your own and the patients' interests- in addition to engaging in conversations with patients, you may participate in a variety of activities, including (but not limited to) crafts, coloring, card games, music, reading and/or prayers. During onboarding, we will develop a personalized plan for the sessions to enhance the patients' well-being. We will provide letters of recommendation for volunteers who demonstrate exceptional commitment and service.
