    Dance for All Bodies General Board Member

    The mission of Dance for All Bodies (DfAB) is to dismantle the ableist narratives in dance and in our daily lives through multicultural, inclusive dance classes that center people with disabilities. Some hallmarks of access in our classes include; dance pedagogy centering people with disabilities, audio descriptions of dance movements, ASL interpretation, closed captioning, completely online classes and donation-based classes. 

    Since its initiation, DfAB organized over 150 dance classes and reached more than 1500 individuals around the world. Some of our previous and current partners include Spina Bifida Association, Amazon, UCSF Orthopedic Trauma Institute, Wheel the World and Rancho Research Institute. In 2021, DfAB was featured in NBC Bay Area and UC Berkeley’s Light the Way. As a growing non-profit, we are looking to expand our Board of Directors to support the organization’s long-term financial growth. We are especially interested in those with experience in accounting, fundraising and/or non-profit management. 

    Dance for All Bodies is a disability affirming workplace. 

    As the highest leadership body of the organization, Board Members are responsible for long-term strategic planning, enhancing the organization’s public standing, fundraising and overseeing legal requirements of the non-profit. 

    • Duty of Care: Take care of the nonprofit by ensuring prudent use of all assets, including facility, people, and good will;
    • Duty of Loyalty: Ensure that the nonprofit's activities and transactions are, first and foremost, advancing its mission; Recognize and disclose conflicts of interest; Make decisions that are in the best interest of the nonprofit corporation; not in the best interest of the individual board member (or any other individual or for-profit entity).
    • Duty of Obedience: Ensure that the nonprofit obeys applicable laws and regulations; follows its own bylaws; and that the nonprofit adheres to its stated corporate purposes/mission.

    Board Member General Responsibilities

    • Develop six month and twelve month plans for the organization along with our Executive Director(s) and in accordance with our mission; define our strategy and a time frame for achievement of our goals. 
    • Define objectives and key results that we hope to see accomplished. Review performance against goals. 
    • Ensure organization is financially stable. Develop and maintain sources of income to provide financial stability. 
    • Hire and develop Executive Director(s) to manage the operations of the organization.
    • Exercise management oversight of the Executive Director(s) and org operations.
    • Approve annual budgets, review operating and financial results.
    • Audit for compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
    • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.
    • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve the organization’s mission.
    • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in quarterly board meetings, and more frequently, as needed.

    Key Competencies

    • Experience in financial organization and/or non-profit management required.
    • Experience with fundraising and non-profit partnership building highly preferred
    • Previous experience working for an arts, disability advocacy non-profit or other grassroots organization is highly preferred. 
    • Collaborative mindset; eager to be part of a team and contribute.
    • Disciplined in working independently and remotely; not afraid to ask questions or admit when you don’t know something.
    • Must be committed to DfAB’s mission to change the face of dance through accessible dance classes.

    Work Environment

    All work can be done remotely. There will be quarterly board of directors meetings as well as potential additional meetings as needed.

    Expected Hours of Work

    While there is room for flexibility in regards to hours, you will be expected to commit around 10 hours/month. 

    Preferred Education and Experience

    At DfAB we believe that experience comes in many different forms. We want to prioritize those who demonstrate a strong commitment to our mission and are therefore willing to commit a great amount of time, thought, and effort into this cause. If you have previous experience in writing grants, sponsorship letters or budgeting that is great!
