Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Tibetan culture and Buddhism by participating in our extraordinary volunteer opportunity: Teaching English in Monasteries. This program, located in the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal, offers you the chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of Tibetan refugee children, as they embark on their educational journey as Buddhist monks. By sharing your knowledge of English, you’ll empower these young monks to explore sacred scriptures written in English and spread Buddhist teachings to the world.
As a dedicated volunteer, you’ll be placed in one of the monasteries, where you’ll teach English to monks of varying ages and proficiency levels. Depending on the monastery’s size, you can expect to work with around 15 monks, each with a moderate or beginner’s level of English. While their primary focus is on Buddhist studies, they also have the opportunity to improve their language skills in English and Nepalese.
No prior teaching experience or formal training is required to participate in this remarkable program. However, your previous experience, if any, will be taken into account when planning your day-to-day activities. This ensures that your unique skills and strengths are utilized effectively, creating an enriching teaching experience for both you and the monks.
Beyond teaching English, our volunteers have the exclusive opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily life of the monastery. You can participate in meditation sessions, join monks in prayers, and experience the rich cultural celebrations that take place within the monastic community. This holistic experience provides a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and its profound teachings.
