    Garden Club Winter Edition

Winter is the ideal season to tackle woody invasive species like barberry, euonymus, multiflora rose, and jetbead. Cutting them back now depletes their root reserves, reducing their vigor and spread over time. This season, our efforts will focus on highly visible and accessible areas at Teatown, including spaces around buildings and Wildflower Woods. By prioritizing these key locations, we aim to establish exemplary zones of a healthy understory, setting a standard for ecological restoration across the preserve.

    What will volunteers do?

Winter work focuses on cutting back invasive woody plants using large loppers, clearing brush, and, where possible, digging up root balls or pulling smaller plants by the root. The tasks are physical and will get your blood moving, helping to stay warm in the cold. Be prepared to work on uneven, potentially slippery terrain in a range of weather conditions. Activities will proceed as weather permits, so come dressed appropriately and ready for hands-on restoration work.

    ¿Cómo llegar?

We’ll meet at the Science Center, across the street from the Nature Center. Please park in the lower lots and walk up. I’ll be waiting at the picnic tables near the small pond to walk up with you. From there, we’ll gather tools at the Stewardship Barn and head to our work site as a group. If you arrive late and don’t see us at the picnic tables, join us at the barn.
