Boulder County Junior Roller Derby Assistant Coach

Join Our Team as a Volunteer Assistant Coach! Help Us Build Colorado’s Next Great Roller Derby Legacy!

Do you have a deep passion for roller derby, a sharp strategic mind, and a natural ability to inspire others? Are you ready to contribute to something extraordinary? If so, the Devils Junior Roller Derby Travel Team and roller derby program is calling for you to join our dynamic coaching team as a Volunteer Assistant Coach!

At the Devils, we’re a scrappy, determined team, proudly stepping into our third season as “underdogs” in the state yet ready to transform the Colorado junior roller derby scene. As we strive to become the region’s breakout team, we’re looking for dedicated Assistant Coaches who are not only committed to the sport but also to fostering a positive, family-like team culture. Together, we’ll elevate our skaters' potential and continue pushing the boundaries of what it means to be an athlete in roller derby!

    Why You Should Join Us:

      • 🏆 Competitive yet Balanced Experience: Help craft a game schedule that blends intense competition, skill-building practices, and exciting scrimmages. Your strategic input will be vital to our skaters’ success!
      • 🤝 Supportive Culture: Join a team that values every skater as family. We believe in celebrating each other’s achievements and growing together, both on and off the track. Your role will be key in nurturing this inclusive, empowering environment.
      • 🚀 Help Shape the Future: Assist our Head Coach, Yo’lee Applebaum (Coach Yo), in developing training strategies that enhance the individual and collective growth of our athletes. Together, we’ll push beyond limits and make a name for ourselves in the junior derby world.

    About Us:

Founded in 2013 and revitalized post-COVID in 2022, the Devils Junior Roller Derby Travel Team (formerly known as the Bottle Rockets) is part of the Boulder County Roller Derby league, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-run organization. The Junior’s program is driven by a passion for roller derby and a commitment to fostering diversity, athletic excellence, and personal empowerment through the sport. Our skaters, aged 6-18 and of all genders and skill levels, are dedicated to breaking stereotypes about athleticism while building lifelong friendships.

    Your Role as Assistant Coach:

In this volunteer position, you’ll work alongside Head Coach Yo, our coaching group, and parent volunteers to execute training strategies, coordinate practices, and develop both individual and team game plans. While the Head Coach takes the lead on key decisions such as playtime distribution and season goals, the Assistant Coaches play an integral role in shaping the overall experience of our athletes. Here’s a glimpse of your responsibilities:

    • Craft Training Plans: Help design and implement training plans that challenge and inspire skaters at all levels.
    • Nurture New Talent: Assist in onboarding new skaters and transfer athletes, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported.
    • Coordinate Practices: Manage the Junior’s practice schedule, maintain the training calendar, and ensure efficient, structured sessions.
    • Stay Current: Keep up with the latest in roller derby strategies, trends, and JRDA regulations.
    • Promote Growth: Participate in feedback sessions with players, focusing on their development both as athletes and team players.
    • Inspire and Lead: Create an inclusive and positive team culture that encourages all skaters to reach their full potential.
    • Expand Horizons: Help organize scrimmages, boot camps, and games in partnership with other leagues, ensuring continuous growth for our team.

    Qualifications We’re Looking For:

    • Experience playing, officiating, or coaching roller derby
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • The ability to motivate and inspire beginner to advance level athletes
    • Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and family-oriented team environment
    • Knowledge of JRDA rules and regulations

    Bonus Skills:

    • Experience coaching roller derby
    • A passion for athletic training, both mental and physical
    • A desire to grow as a coach and help the team reach the next level

    Requirements

    • All candidates will be required to pass a background check and orientation/training prior to starting.

    Why This Role is Unique:

We understand the challenges of committing time, so we offer flexibility. If your passion lies in coaching specific areas such as jammers, strength & conditioning, strategy, or bench coaching, we’re open to tailoring your role based on your expertise and interests. Whether you're able to contribute full-time or prefer a part-time coaching commitment, we want to hear from you!

    Compensation:

This is an unpaid, volunteer position. As part of our coaching team, you’ll travel with us to local and regional games (stipends will be provided for travel) and share in the exhilarating journey of building a competitive junior derby team that challenges the status quo.

Join us, and help us prove that with heart, grit, and teamwork, we can rise to the top! Ready to be a part of our legacy? Apply today and let’s skate towards greatness together!
