Since 1971, Community Help in Park Slope, Inc. (CHiPS) has been supported by a community of Brooklyn neighbors, volunteers, and friends who share a common vision to help those who are less fortunate. Located on the border between Park Slope and Gowanus in Brooklyn, NY, CHiPS is a 501(c)(3) organization serving the homeless and hungry through two distinct programs housed in one building: a soup kitchen, and a transitional residence for pregnant young women and their infants.

CHiPS has evolved over the years from a small, soup-only kitchen where cots were put out at night for local homeless men to a commercial-grade kitchen and dining room where about 150 volunteers per week prepare and distribute breakfast, hot lunch, to-go sandwiches, and emergency pantry bags totaling approximately 350 meals per day. CHiPS also provides donated seasonal clothing and personal hygiene items to families in need.

Upstairs, the CHiPS Frances Residence provides safe, furnished studio apartments and support services for up to seven pregnant and postpartum homeless young women and their infants, who can stay for 12 months. During that time, the residency program helps the mothers become self-sufficient through meetings with staff focused on maternal/child health, career development, and life skills. The program also coordinates with neighborhood social service agencies to help the women secure permanent affordable housing, and explore educational and employment opportunities.
