    ORGANIZATION

    Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the psychological and psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses and forced displacement resulting from war, torture, persecution related to identity and beliefs, gender-based violence and other forms of interpersonal violence. PTR provides culturally and contextually responsive, trauma-informed, and linguistically accessible psychological and psychosocial care for asylum seekers and refugees from around the world. PTR’s African Communities Program (ACP) provides psychological and psychosocial care for African immigrants and conducts targeted outreach to expand awareness of and increase access to PTR’s services.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic nonprofit organization working at the juncture of global mental health and human rights. The primary responsibility of the African Communities Wellbeing Coordinator will be to provide trauma-informed, culturally reflective and linguistically accessible psychosocial support and community healing for African immigrants. This position will be required to offer in-person service delivery a minimum of 1-2 days/week either at the PTR office or in the community.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    The roles and responsibilities of the African Communities Wellbeing Coordinator will include but are not limited to the following:

    Community Outreach, Communication & Collaboration (50%)

    • Identify and establish professional relationships with African community leaders and organizations to reduce stigma and raise awareness about mental health.
    • Represent PTR to community partners and organizations through events, presentations, and capacity-building activities.
    • Conduct psychoeducation workshops, community events, and meetings with community leaders.
    • Collaborate with other program teams around mental health issues, and de-stigmatization programming
    • Perform needs assessments to determine the requirements of the communities served.
    • Supporting African community members and clients through service referrals. and accompanying clients.
    • Assist in the development of innovative strategies for community engagement

    Individual Support, Awareness Raising and Sensitization (50%)

    • Conduct consultative meetings with community members who need mental health support and provide prevention visits to individual clients.
    • Coordinate with the Mental Health Specialist throughout the client care process
    • In collaboration with the Mental Health Specialist, establish, strengthen, and facilitate support groups with African youth, and other marginalized members of communities

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Competencies & Experience

    • Interest in the psychological and psychosocial wellbeing of African immigrants or international human rights abuse survivors.
    • An understanding of the diverse African populations resettled in the Bay Area.
    • A commitment to advancing human rights & global social justice with a focus on the needs of African survivors seeking greater safety in the United States.
    • Ability to comfortably address and discuss the community mental health and wellbeing needs of international survivors of human rights abuses without judgment or stigma.
    • Knowledge of and connections with African communities in the Bay Area, particularly with agencies and locations where African community members gather for activities, socializing, services, and programming.
    • Oral fluency in Tigrinya or other African languages are required.
    • Spoken and written proficiency in English.

    Preferred Competencies & Experiences

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Social Work, Public Health, or related field.
    • Experience working with forcibly displaced refugee and/or asylum-seeking populations.
    • Experience planning & implementing community outreach activities & psycho-educational training.
    • Commitment to global social justice and human rights.
    • Comfortable expressing cultural humility
    • Ability to travel to different locations in the Bay Area.

    Salary & Benefits
