    The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is hiring for a Development Associate in our Charlottesville, VA. headquarters office. It is an exciting time to join SELC’s Development team, which is currently going through a strategic refresh and expansion to support the organization’s long-term goals. The Development Associate is the key central orchestrator of administrative functions for the fundraising team and provides executive support for our Chief Development Officer. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful, nationally recognized organization that is effectively addressing some of the most pressing and challenging environmental issues throughout the South and the nation.

    This is a full-time, non-exempt position. SELC currently has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work at home up to two days a week. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a criminal background check. SELC will provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Provides executive assistance to the Chief Development Officer including travel planning, scheduling and meeting planning.
    • Partners with the CDO to plan and execute meetings and communications for the development department and the seven-member development leadership team (CDO plus Directors of Development Operations, Individual Giving, Foundations, Donor Relations, Annual Giving, and Development Communications).
    • Serves as the point of contact for the Development team for budgeting, tracking expenses, processing invoices, and ensuring reconciliation. Provides training and assistance to colleagues for tracking expenses. Acts as the liaison to the accounting department.
    • Coordinates development team hiring processes, including interview scheduling and onboarding coordination for new staff.
    • Assists with the scheduling of the Board of Trustee’s Development Committee meetings and prepares minutes.
    • Helps prepare materials for internal and external meetings and presentations to ensure consistent messaging and brand standards are met.
    • Ensures that the Development suite remains organized and running efficiently. This includes working with other administrative staff to maintain kitchen and office supply inventories and coordinating office equipment.
    • Assists with mailings and event management.

    Required Qualifications:

    • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Minimum three years of administrative or related experience, preferably with experience in fundraising operations or supporting a fundraising team.
    • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Self-motivated and capable of working proactively and independently.
    • Rare weekend and evening work may be required for donor and volunteer events.

    Compensation & Benefits:

    SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. The starting salary range for this position is $50,000-$60,000. For more details about our benefits package, please visit our Careers page.

    SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.

    SELC will also provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position, up to a specific dollar amount and contingent on the move being at least 50 miles from the current primary address.
