Job Title: Part-Time Shelter Advocate

Schedule: Fridays and Saturdays 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Reports To: Shelter Shift Supervisor

Alternative House provides comprehensive services to survivors of domestic violence, including emergency shelter, community-based advocacy, legal support, housing assistance, youth programming, and prevention education. Our mission is to facilitate the safety, stabilization, and empowerment of survivors while promoting social change through community education and systems advocacy.

Position Summary

The Part-Time Shelter Advocate is responsible for providing direct support to survivors residing in our emergency shelter. This role supports daily shelter operations, maintains a safe and welcoming environment, and offers emotional support, de-escalation, and crisis intervention as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• • Hotline Coverage:
  • Answer hotline calls promptly and professionally.
  • Provide crisis support, safety planning, and referrals.
  • Document all calls per agency protocol.
  • Client Support & Interaction:
  • Serve as the front-line responder to residents' needs.
  • Offer emotional support and help with daily routines.
  • Assist in resolving minor conflicts and escalating concerns appropriately.
  • Assigning Weekly Chores:
  • Review chore chart and assign responsibilities to residents.
  • Clearly communicate expectations and follow up on completion.
  • Room and Chore Checks:
  • Conduct regular inspections of client rooms and shared spaces.
  • Document cleanliness, safety concerns, or maintenance issues.
  • Resource Management:
  • Distribute supplies as needed and restock resource areas.
  • Track inventory and notify supervisors when items are low.
  • Administrative Tasks:
  • Copy and organize forms, maintain client documentation securely.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all client information.
  • Shift Communication:
  • Complete end-of-shift notes and log notable events or concerns for incoming staff.

Qualifications

• • Experience working in shelter, crisis, or human services setting preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Bilingual skills a plus
