Supervisor: Chief Policy Officer

Salary Range: $90,000- $95,000

The Role: Project Bread is seeking a dynamic and driven Director to lead the execution of the Make Hunger History initiative. Reporting to the Chief Policy Officer, this individual will oversee the day-to-day operations and ensure alignment with the strategic vision set by Project Bread and coalition leadership, including an Advisory Committee comprised of partners, community members, and representatives from supporting organizations.

A successful candidate will be a skilled coalition builder, adept at navigating the unique challenge of leading an initiative that is housed within Project Bread while reflecting the priorities of a broad, collaborative strategy to end hunger in Massachusetts. They will bring expertise in managing complex initiatives with diverse stakeholders, translating strategic vision into actionable plans, and driving measurable progress that unites a wide range of priorities and partners.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Leadership & Management:
  • Lead the backbone function to ensure effective execution of the Make Hunger History initiative.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Policy Officer to implement the initiative’s strategic plan, providing regular updates on progress and challenges.
  • Maintain transparent communication with the Advisory Committee, coalition members, partners, and stakeholders, reporting on progress, challenges, and key performance indicators.
  • Identify capacity gaps and support any potential future hiring and resource planning in line with the initiative’s needs.
• Facilitation & Stakeholder Alignment:
  • Collaborate with Advisory Committee, workgroups, and partners to drive programmatic, movement-building, legislative, and advocacy priorities.
  • Assist Advisory Committee and workgroup co-chairs with meeting facilitation and materials preparation.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with stakeholders and broader coalition members.
  • Expand cross-sector participation by identifying and recruiting new stakeholders to the Make Hunger History coalition.
• Communications:
  • Serve as a public ambassador for Make Hunger History, clearly articulating objectives and goals to various audiences.
  • Collaborate with communications staff or consultants to manage web, social media, and press strategies.
• Impact & Data:
  • Oversee the development of a shared measurement system that tracks outcomes across the initiative.
  • Ensure that all partners are aligned on common goals, using data to drive continuous improvement.

Organizational Responsibilities:

• Support the Project Bread’s annual Walk for Hunger, including working as event staff the weekend of the Walk (first weekend in May), and attending pre-Walk events as assigned.
• Participate in Leadership Team and organization-wide events and meetings.
• Act to promote, sustain, and grow Project Bread’s positive, productive, and inclusive working environment.

Reporting Relationships

The Director will report to the Chief Policy Officer of Project Bread and work closely with the Advisory Committee. This role does not initially have direct reports but may involve building and managing a team as the initiative grows.

• A deep commitment to Make Hunger History’s mission and goals.
• 6-10 years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years in program leadership, directing coalition-based initiatives, or a similar role.
• Experience executing complex initiatives and working with diverse coalitions.
• Strong operational and project management skills.
• Strong facilitation and presentation skills before multiple types of audiences.
• Proven ability to manage multiple stakeholders and partners.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaborative relationships.
• Comfort with ambiguity and flexibility to adapt to evolving needs.
• Familiarity with issues related to hunger or food insecurity.

Additional Requirements

• Working Location: All employees currently work in a hybrid remote and in-office model and are expected to spend at least some time in the East Boston office each week. The Director of Make Hunger History will additionally be expected to travel to and attend in-person meetings and events with initiative stakeholders statewide.
