    About you: You are passionate about Haymarket’s work and mission and have a demonstrated commitment to progressive and radical social movements. You are comfortable in a position with varied responsibilities, which require great attention to detail and a high level of organization. Spreadsheets are your middle name! You don’t mind juggling multiple tasks and working to deadlines, and you can do work that requires a lot of accuracy. This position will involve frequent interaction with staff throughout the organization and Haymarket authors, readers, and organizational partners.

    About this position: Haymarket Books seeks a Finance and Operations Staffer to support all aspects of our publishing work. This position will be responsible for a mix of accounting, administrative, and operational responsibility, will work directly with our accountant and publisher, and will have the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day running of a nonprofit organization. Preference will be given to candidates based in Chicago, but we will consider remote candidates, especially those willing to relocate to Chicago.

    • General Accounting (60% of role)
      • Assist in day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable and receivable
      • Assist with grant management and reporting
      • Generate timely financial statements and reports for multiple internal departments
      • Prepare monthly income and expense statements for fiscally sponsored projects
    • Order Fulfillment and Customer Service (20% of role)
      • Manage incoming customer service inquiries
      • Handle customer queries related to our subscription offerings
      • Process internal orders for publicity, marketing, events and other departments
      • Work with nonprofit partners on bulk orders, including shipments, billing, and payments
    • Rights and contracts (10% of role)
      • Assist in author royalty and advances payment processing
      • Enter contract terms in our title management system
      • Assist in drafting author and sub-rights contracts, including sending for signature and tracking payments due
    • Additional administrative tasks (10% of role)
      • Assist with travel arrangements for events and conferences
      • Other ad-hoc tasks as assigned

    Requirements

    • Commitment to the mission of Haymarket’s publishing project: Knowledge of leftwing politics and movements and a strong investment in social and racial justice.
    • Detail-oriented: Ability to manage multiple types of data entry and reporting without errors, catching things others miss
    • Eager to help behind the scenes: Appreciates the importance of administrative and operations work and understands that accurate data entry and record-keeping is critical to an organization’s health. Able to work independently much of the time.
    • Highly organized: Can shift priorities as needed, responding to changes in workflow when they happen. Takes on routine tasks and completes them on deadline. Able to handle multiple deadlines at the same time.
    • Communication: Ability to interact with multiple stakeholders who have widely different needs, from internal staff to authors to vendors and customers, in a timely, friendly, and professional manner.
    • Technical skills: Knowledge of financial platforms (specifically Quickbooks) and Excel, and an ability to learn new systems quickly. Understanding of GAAP accounting principles is a plus, especially in a nonprofit context.

    Salary: Salary for this position is between $55,352 - $58,723 depending on experience and according to Haymarket’s staff salary schedule

    Benefits: 100% of employee health insurance covered and 50% of partner’s, 401k contribution, 4 weeks paid vacation plus 16 holidays, 2 weeks paid sick leave, 12 weeks paid parental leave, as well as short-term and long-term disability and life insurance, $2,000 relocation stipend
