    We are seeking a new Controller for our client Read to Them, who is celebrating 20 years as a growing nonprofit that believes in the transformational power of reading aloud to children. They bolster personal and academic success through a rich reading strategy that forges lasting partnerships across families, schools, and their communities. The One School, One Book program offers flexible, ready-made tools and resources for individual schools, districts, and states. Read to Them programs have been implemented in 3,000+ schools, reaching more than 2.4 million students in the United States!

    The Controller is hands-on and responsible for managing the finances of the organization, including budgets, taxes, payroll, investments, receivables, and payables according to accepted accounting practices and applicable law. This key member of the Read to Them team reports to the Executive Director and manages the accounting staff.     Summary of Job Responsibilities and Requirements

    • Financial reporting: Preparing and coordinating financial statements and reports, both internal and external; oversee management of investment accounts, including endowment; prepares quarterly financial reports for board and monthly reports for management
    • Budgeting: Assisting with budget preparation, monitoring variances, and reporting to upper management
    • Accounting: Managing accounting records, payroll, checking accounts, credit cards, health and retirement contribution, deferred revenue calculations, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
    • Compliance: Ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, including tax planning and compliance; Monitor and maintain compliance with 403(b) retirement plan regulations; Knowledge of state employment tax laws.
    • Risk management: Establishing internal controls to protect assets
    • Financial performance: Developing and monitoring financial performance metrics
    • Develop organizational financial strategy: Work with other executive decision-makers to minimize risk and identify growth opportunities. Use advanced accounting skills to generate actionable insights from technical and financial data.
    • Supervises: team of two through effective communications, coaching, training and development.
    • Other assigned duties or special projects, as needed.

    Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

    • Minimum bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related areas.
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) a plus.
    • Minimum 5 years' accounting and finance duties in budgeting / financial management, program operations, compliance, and risk management.
    • Experience in a non-profit organization and interacting with a Board of Directors.
    • Experience managing grant funding and preparing detailed financial and narrative reports for grantors.
    • Successful experience in leading change and process improvement (e.g., systems, automation, and conversions).
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and online QuickBooks.
    • Payroll processing or oversight preferred.
    • Excellent presentation, communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal, collaborative and leadership skills.
    • Promotes and adheres to the company's mission, vision and values, policies, and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner.
    • Represents the organization in a professional manner to all customers, vendors, and internal personnel.
    • The typical full-time work schedule is Monday through Friday.
    • Successfully complete pre-employment background screening.

    Competitive Salary & Benefits Package including health, dental, and vision insurance, generous office holiday and personal PTO policy, 403(b) retirement plan with organizational match of 3%, professional development opportunities and potential for some remote work. The salary range is approximately $85,000 - $95,000 depending upon related credentials and work experience.
