    Primary Function: As the Manager of Volunteer Services at spcaLA, you will oversee the recruitment, training, and management of our dedicated volunteers. This pivotal role supports our mission by enhancing volunteer engagement and ensuring effective service delivery in our animal welfare programs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement strategies for volunteer recruitment and retention.
    • Manage the volunteer program, including scheduling, training, and performance evaluation.
    • Collaborate with various departments to identify volunteer needs and opportunities.
    • Facilitate training sessions to equip volunteers with necessary skills and knowledge.
    • Monitor volunteer engagement and satisfaction to foster a positive experience.
    • Utilize Volgistics, Volunteer Management Software, for tracking volunteer data, reports and communications.
    • Supervise volunteer activities to ensure alignment with spcaLA's mission and standards.
    • Represent spcaLA at community events to promote volunteer opportunities.
    • Create and maintain updated volunteer job descriptions to ensure efficiency of volunteer positions.
    • Prepare and monitor the department budget to effectively allocate resources.
    • Maintain a high level of communication and work collaboratively with all personnel in a manner that is consistent with agency policy.
    • Perform other duties, as necessary to improve the functioning of the Community Engagement Department and the Society as a whole.

    Job Related and Essential Qualifications:

    • Proven experience in volunteer management or related field.
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide volunteers effectively.
    • Excellent communication skills for public speaking and training purposes.
    • Experience with recruiting and retention strategies, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
    • Familiarity with Volgistics or similar database systems is a plus.
    • Background in social work or community outreach is beneficial but not required.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
    • Passion for animal welfare and commitment to spcaLA's mission
    • Work independently or within a team setting in an environment with ever changing priorities and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. Originate and execute projects with little or no supervision.
    • Perform the job in professional manner and work efficiently under pressure
    • Work flexible hours, including some weekday nights and weekends.

    Knowledge of:

    • Basic knowledge of domestic animals and animal care preferred
    • General Human Resources policies and procedures as they relate to volunteer personnel
    • Computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoom, Teams, etc.)

    Other Essential Qualifications:

    License Required: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License and car will be required prior to employment. License must be maintained in the course of employment. Insurable to drive company vehicle. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.

    Physical Demands: While performing this job the employee is regularly required to handle animals in the course of training volunteers and assisting shelter staff and other departments. Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit and kneel, crouch or crawl. Perform work that may involve lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lbs. or more.

    Working Conditions: Dealing with an office environment in which the noise level is generally moderate, but on occasion will be high. Possibly dealing with hostile public. Operation of a vehicle under all types of weather and road conditions. Working closely with animals in the shelters there is possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.

    Experience and Training

    • Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Communications, Organizational Management, Public Administration or related field, or equivalent work experience
    • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with volunteers
    • Proven excellent written and communication skills
