    About ReCARES

ReCARES is a local community benefit and environmental 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Its mission is to increase access to medical equipment and supplies while decreasing environmental waste. For 30 years, ReCARES Network volunteers have enhanced the quality of life and improved the independence of Bay Area residents by collecting no-longer-needed durable medical equipment and home health care supplies and redistributing those to underserved community members across three Bay Area counties: Marin, Alameda, and San Francisco. Every week, the walkers, wheelchairs, adult diapers, medical supplies, and other items are collected and made available free of charge to local seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals who might have difficulty affording such items. In 2023, we served 8,800 recipients and diverted 28,000 items of medical equipment and supplies from landfills.

    Position Summary

The Oakland ReCARES location is the largest and busiest collection and redistribution site. The site manager position is responsible for safe and efficient program operations–including space and inventory management, volunteer coordination, and managing the movement of patrons and vehicles through the site during weekly service hours. The manager maintains positive relationships with our landlord and other neighboring tenants at our 2619 Broadway location.

This is an independent contractor position with responsibilities that require approximately 10-15 hours each week to complete. Starting compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will range from $20-22 per hour. Most responsibilities will be completed at the Oakland site preparing for and overseeing provision of services to the public on Fridays, with flexible scheduling and remote completion for other tasks via phone and computer.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Some combination of leadership, supervisory, and space management experience is preferred; a bachelor’s degree is desired.
    • 1-2 years of customer service experience with the general public, or in the healthcare community, or with teams of volunteers. Should have the ability to balance the setting of boundaries, while gracefully managing potential conflict.
    • Strong oral communication. Experience engaging respectfully and competently with others from differing racial, generational, cultural, and economic backgrounds, including marginalized people. Bilingual (Spanish or Cantonese) is a bonus.
    • Mechanical aptitude or willingness and ability to learn how to assess or perform minor and quick repairs to commonly donated healthcare equipment.
    • Familiarity with: Gmail, Google Docs/Sheets/Forms, Google Meets, Google Calendar, Google Voice, and social media (Facebook, Instagram) desirable.

    Physical Demands

The job involves standing, walking, lifting and working with and around a variety of equipment, parts, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies. Must possess maneuverability to work in a small warehouse-style storage setting with strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work. Must have adequate vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification require bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching to perform work. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

    Core Responsibilities:

    • Propose yearly site performance goals and objectives.
    • Manage allocation of program resources.
    • Lead activities—including weekly set-up, breakdown, and service to patrons. Problem-solve as needed.
    • Coordinate and supervise volunteer orientation, scheduling, and participation. Provide regular feedback on needs for additional support and direction. Ensure ongoing opportunities for meaningful volunteer experiences.
    • Manage workflow–receiving, handling, storing, and give-away–of medical equipment and supplies. Maintain site organization, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
    • Coordinate receipt and distribution of large/bulk donations in a manner that maintains partner relationships consistently with the mission.
    • Serve as ReCARES’ primary spokesperson to constituents and the public during program open hours. Collaborate with the Program Director to maintain the program’s visibility and positive reputation in the community.
    • Receive and deposit weekly donations, including checks and cash.
    • Maintain regular, responsive communication with administrative staff in support of accurate responses to email, social media, and telephone inquiries regarding equipment and supplies availability.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
