    Government Accountability Project Deputy Litigation Director Announcement

    Background

    The Government Accountability Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest organization, is the world’s leading international whistleblower protection and advocacy organization. Founded in 1977 at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), the organization was formed in response to an urgent need to assist several whistleblowers, such as Daniel Ellsberg, who came to IPS about White House, FBI and Pentagon scandals. Since that time, Government Accountability Project has served as a lifeline to courageous employees, helping them to release critical information that serves the public interest and the common good.

    Government Accountability Project litigates whistleblower cases, helps expose wrongdoing to the public, and actively promotes government and corporate accountability. Since its founding, Government Accountability Project has helped thousands of whistleblowers who have raised concerns about numerous issues of public concern, defending them in the court of law and the court of public opinion, while crafting and refining whistleblower protection laws through legislative channels at home and abroad. Since its inception, Government Accountability Project’s advocacy efforts have shaped both public interest and legislative agendas and created opportunities for lawmakers to strengthen and clarify the free-speech rights of courageous employees across a broad spectrum of issues.

    Deputy Litigation Director

    The Deputy Litigation Director reports to and works in collaboration with the Litigation Director to manage representation of whistleblower clients before various administrative tribunals and state and federal courts.

    The Deputy litigation Director also serves as counsel of record for whistleblower clients, evaluating the legal needs, risks, and opportunities of whistleblower clients through Government Accountability Project’s campaign methodology.

    General Duties

    • Work with the Litigation Director to develop and execute litigation plans and manage a docket of cases before administrative, state, and federal courts including the Merit Systems Protection Board, under various statutes including but not limited to the Whistleblower Protection Act, the False Claims Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and other whistleblower protection laws.
    • Supervise litigation teams of staff attorneys and contract counsel, and serve on litigation teams with third-party co-counsel, to ensure timely completion of high-quality work product including motions, briefs, administrative complaints, public disclosures, and investigations in accordance with GAP policies and procedures.
    • Serve as Counsel of Record for whistleblower clients making disclosures and/or retaliation complaints in administrative tribunals and state and federal district courts.
    • Work with and advise whistleblowers regarding their goals, legal rights, risks and options.
    • Supervise and ensure maintenance of organized and up-to-date client files for each client matter, as well as a master case tracking list.
    • In coordination with the Advocacy Team, participate in coalition and partnership building.
    • Keep current with developments in the fields of whistleblower law and other issue areas and provide strategic analysis of trends in response to organizational priorities and immediate or emerging threats.
    • Engage in program evaluation and monitoring to identify quality improvement opportunities.
    • Work collaboratively with all staff across the organization to serve and reinforce Government Accountability Project’s whistleblower methodology.

    Qualifications

    • Passion for the mission of the Government Accountability Project and supporting whistleblowers.
    • Juris Doctor Degree and a minimum of 15 years of experience practicing complex and sophisticated litigation in administrative, state, federal, and appellate courts in employment law, whistleblower law, or other comparable experience.
    • Active member in good standing of the bar of a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
    • Eligible to obtain a license to practice law in the District of Columbia within 360 days of accepting employment.
    • Demonstrated experience and success as a manager, supervisor, or team leader.
    • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, work both autonomously and in teams, and meet tight deadlines.
    • Experience or interest in litigating cases in coordination with advocacy goals.
    • Superb writing and communications skills.
    • A self-motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
    • The successful applicant will possess the experience necessary to work with substantial independent judgment and discretion in furtherance of the program objectives.

    Salary

    $120,000-$130,000+ commensurate with experience. Government Accountability Project also offers a generous benefits package.
