Acting Director of Music Ministry

Position Introduction

Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Wheaton, Maryland seeks an acting director of music ministry to direct our adult choir and serve as the primary musician for our Sunday worship. We are a progressive, open and affirming, diverse congregation committed to social justice. The acting director reports to the senior pastor and works in collaboration with the pastor, Music Committee, and other staff and volunteers to carry out the weekly music program of the Church. This position is available almost immediately; priority will go to candidates who are able to begin on 4/13. Duties and Responsibilities

• Leads the music ministry of the church.
• Directs and rehearses the adult choir.
• Plays the piano (and organ if possible) for worship services.
• Collaborates with the senior pastor and other volunteers to plan and carry out music during Sunday worship services as well as other special occasions, such as Holy Week, Christmas Eve, etc.
• Collaborates with the office manager to provide information on music for the worship bulletin.
• Uses diverse musical genres and a wide range of sacred music types and styles to foster inclusion of all races and cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in similar position
• Experience with sacred music
• Strong piano skills required, ability to play the organ a plus
• Experience conducting vocal ensembles
• Communicates clearly and effectively
• Collaborative, organized, and flexible
• Bachelor’s degree in a music-related discipline not required, but a plus
• Values aligned with Pilgrim Church UCC core beliefs

Compensation:

• $375/week

Term:

This acting position is designed to meet an immediate need on a week by week or month by month basis. If the right candidate is identified, there is the possibility to convert this role into a settled, salaried position with expanded responsibilities and increased compensation.
