    Introduction

    Barbershop Books, winner of the National Book Foundation's Innovations in Reading Prize, inspires Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun through culturally responsive, community-based programming and content. We are seeking a highly organized and dependable Office Assistant to support administrative tasks. As a growing organization, this part-time role offers an opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven and fast paced nonprofit with opportunities for learning new skills and career growth.

    PROGRAMS:

    Barbershop Books: Distributes boy-approved books to a national network of barbershops and provides early literacy training to barbers.

    Barbershop Books E-Library: Free online collection of independently published children's e-books by Black and Brown authors and fun storytime videos.

    Reading So Lit Summer: A virtual summer reading program that hires and trains male high school students of color to lead fun, interactive reading explorations with Black and Brown boys ages 6-8.

    Reading So Lit (platform): A reading identity exploration and assessment platform for grades preK-5 that equips teachers and school leaders with actionable, strengths-based data to make student-driven decisions that accelerate reading achievement.

    Responsibilities

    • Mail Management: Responsible for receiving, sorting, and distributing all office mail.
    • Gift Handling: Receive, open, scan, process, and record physical donations for the Development Department.
    • Data Entry: Maintain accurate records, databases, and documents as assigned.
    • Supplies Management: Order office supplies and maintain office inventory.
    • Delivery Management: Oversee deliveries and ensure proper routing to relevant staff.
    • Visitor Reception: Greet and assist visitors as they arrive at the office.
    • File Organization: Manage and organize physical and digital office files.
    • Meeting Preparation: Assist with meeting preparations, including printing, copying, and setting up meeting spaces.
    • Mailings: Prepare and send correspondence (e.g., donor acknowledgment letters) and other mailings as required.
    • Additional duties: As assigned by the COO or other senior leadership.

    Skills/Qualifications

    This is an excellent opportunity for a highly organized and detail-oriented individual who is eager to contribute to a mission-driven nonprofit. The ideal candidate should have experience in handling office operations, managing inventory, and providing support to various departments. A positive attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask are essential for success in this role.

    Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required

    Computer Skills: Proficiency in Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive).

    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interaction with colleagues and external visitors
    • Professional demeanor with the ability to work independently
