    The Opportunity:

BYM Camps is seeking Mental, Emotional, & Social Health (MESH) Coordinators to work at each of its four camp programs: Catoctin, Opequon, Shiloh, and Teen Adventure. The ideal candidate has a passion for working with children in both individual and group contexts, is at least an aspiring mental health professional who is either licensed or actively pursuing their license, has experience with BYM Camps or other similar experiential education settings, and has strong interpersonal communication skills. They have the proven ability to maintain the mental, emotional, and social resilience needed for a fast-paced and interactive work environment. They are able to fluently engage across difference with issues of race, class, and gender with youth. They are comfortable implementing our MESH curriculum and facilitating MESH activities, supporting the larger goal of a restorative and joyous camp experience for all campers that promotes health of all kinds.

    Who We Are:

BYM Camps is a family of four summer camp programs spread along the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and Maryland, serving approximately 600 young people between the ages of 9 and 17. Operated and stewarded by the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), these four programs are unique and distinctive but tied together by a belief in the importance and value of every person. From hiking to canoeing to rock climbing, from organic farming to creative arts, from group games to group work, our campers develop the kind of self-knowledge and self-esteem that leads to personal, emotional, and spiritual growth. These four programs provide a meaningful and unforgettable summer experience, but more than that, they produce in campers a lifetime of lessons, confidence, and connection.

    What You’ll Do:

The MESH Coordinator, reporting to the Camp Director, is responsible for:

    • Designing and implementing targeted supports for a small collection of campers, with the support of the Camp Director and the MESH Director, who have been identified as needing those supports in order to thrive at camp.
    • Playing a lead role in communication with parents of campers who need targeted support, both before and during camp.
    • Assisting with the process of identifying campers that need targeted support, and with the process of designing those targeted MESH interventions.
    • Communicating and collaborating with counselors of campers who are receiving targeted support.
    • Facilitating three MESH-related activities for the general camper population each week.
    • Supporting the MESH Director in the facilitation of MESH training for staff, if appropriate.

Who You Are & Keys to Success (the must-haves):

To be successful in this job, you will excel in these areas:

    • Building trusting and safe relationships with youth: You connect with campers, individually and in group settings. You are capable of establishing, maintaining, and supporting appropriate mental, emotional, and social interactions within our vibrant, diverse, and youth-centric community.
    • Maintaining calm and perspective in crisis: You are able to handle moments of crisis in a calm and thoughtful way, communicating with all parties as necessary, acting decisively when necessary, and establishing a sense of perspective while ensuring everyone feels secure and cared for.
    • Communicating with families: You are comfortable speaking with parents – before, during, and after a challenging situation or crisis – and building a sense of partnership and collaboration as we together support a camper and navigate a situation toward the optimal solution for all.
    • Commitment to equity and justice: You believe that a truly diverse camp community makes us stronger, wiser, and more resilient. You facilitate age-appropriate social and emotional curricula for campers that includes structured opportunities to build meaningful relationships and transform conflict across difference.

    What Else You Should Know:

BYM Camps is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage and seek applications from people of color, including bilingual and bicultural individuals, as well as women, and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

The position is seasonal and on-site in the summer, from mid-June to mid-August. The salary range for the position is $3500 - $5000.
