    About the Policy and Program Department

    The NYIC Policy and Programs Department comprises Policy, Community Programming, Legal Services, Statewide Service Coordination, Training, and Membership and Capacity-Building teams. Collectively, the Policy and Programs Department works to deliver policy change at the federal, state, and local levels; coordinate and deliver services and equip Members, partners, and legal service providers to educate communities on their rights and access to services and benefits; and capacity build a diverse and robust Membership to advance justice and opportunity for immigrants and refugees.

    Summary of the Position

    We are seeking an Access Health Fellow to work with the Policy Team’s Director of Healthy Communities on the Access Health NYC initiative, a program that builds capacity, amplifies existing community-based efforts, and supports CBOs in targeting individuals and families who are uninsured, have limited English proficiency, have disabilities, are LGBTQ, are formerly incarcerated and/or homeless, and other New Yorkers experiencing barriers to healthcare access/information about health coverage and options. Access Health NYC enhances the work of NY State-funded navigators by informing and linking hard-to-reach and underserved New Yorkers to coverage and existing free and low-cost health care options, and to provide consumer assistance.

    The Fellow will be familiar with New York City specific health policies and programs, healthcare related issues and services, program/training evaluation, and/or access to services and benefits, demonstrate an unwavering commitment to advancing health equity, seek collaboration to shape the future of healthcare in New York, and be passionate about immigration policy, advocacy, and programming.

    The Fellow will be supervised by the Director of Healthy Communities, with the support of the Senior Director of Policy, and work with other NYIC staff, NYIC member organizations, and allied partner organizations to advance organizational goals on the Access Health initiative, including through research and analysis of law and policy, publications and other material development, trainings, support for initiatives relating to Access Health NYC program, and other support as needed. The Fellow will also work in close collaboration with the NYIC’s Immigrant Concerns Training Institute (ICTI) and Training Team, which provides high-quality trainings designed to support New York State's nonprofit agencies and legal service providers.

    Hours and Compensation

    The Fellow will work five days a week from December 2024 through August 2025. The position is in person in the NYIC’s offices in midtown Manhattan. Candidates who are offered a position will be expected to work full days unless other arrangements have been negotiated.

    Summary of Responsibilities

    • Support the Department’s programming and management of the Access Health initiative, including but not limited to:
      • Managing and updating annual training schedules and offerings;
      • Liaising with grantees and partners around program deliverables;
      • Facilitating and monitoring trainings and interactions;
      • Monitoring survey data, program data, and analyses.
    • Support scoping and development of Policy materials related to Access Health, such as briefs, one-pagers, thought pieces, and other outputs;
    • Assist in project management and program administration;
    • Assist in planning, promoting, and implementing Policy and Program initiatives;
    • Assist in implementing and troubleshooting organizational protocols and processes to advance Policy work supporting campaigns.
    • Occasionally carries or moves materials weighing 50 pounds or less.

    Qualifications

    • Current graduate students, law students, or undergraduate students with a preference for second- or third-year students (sophomores and juniors).
    • Familiarity with health policy analysis, program/training evaluation, and/or access to services and benefits.
    • Knowledge of the U.S. federal healthcare system, including the Affordable Care Act and publicly-financed health care programs such as Medicaid, and strong experience with the NYS and NYC healthcare system is desired.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse staff, coalitions, and community partners and facilitating meetings with stakeholders.
    • Computer fluency, particularly in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, project management software (Asana), Salesforce or other similar CRM, and Zoom.
    • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize projects and follow through on detail with high-level accuracy.
    • Must be a team player and able to adapt as necessary to changing circumstances.
    • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple, complex tasks.
    • Familiarity with New York State and New York City community-based immigrant organizations is highly desirable.
    • Strong organizational, verbal communication, writing, and computer skills.
    • Bi- or multi-lingual ability is preferred (Spanish, Mandarin, Russian and/or South Asian language skills highly desired), but not mandatory.
    • Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

    Salary Range: $20/hour
