Position:

Union Capital seeks an experienced and passionate Director of Development to lead and implement our fundraising strategy, focusing on individual and major gifts, corporate partnerships, marketing, and grants management. This role reports directly to the Lead Organizer/Executive Director and collaborates closely with the Board of Directors. The Director of Development will build and execute an annual fundraising plan aimed at developing and sustaining meaningful relationships with donors. This role requires a strategic thinker who can drive Union Capital’s growth and expand our support base through compelling communications, effective stewardship, and targeted fundraising initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Donor Relations

• Develop and execute a comprehensive annual fundraising plan, incorporating individual and major gift strategies, corporate partnerships, grant funding, and events.
• Cultivate and manage a portfolio of individual and major donors, building deep, transformative relationships to support Union Capital’s mission.
• Partner with the ED to steward corporate relationships and pursue new opportunities for funding and sponsorships.
• Plan and execute small-format fundraising events to engage and cultivate donors and increase Union Capital’s visibility.
• Create and manage a donor stewardship and recognition plan, ensuring timely acknowledgment and impactful engagement with donors.

Board Engagement

• Engage the Board as ambassadors for Union Capital by providing them with the tools and resources to support fundraising efforts.
• Leverage board members’ networks and encourage active participation in individual and corporate fundraising efforts.
• Oversee the Board Development Committee

Marketing and Communications

• Oversee the development and execution of a strategic communications plan to support fundraising, including digital marketing, social media, and direct mail.
• Craft compelling narratives and donor-facing materials to engage and inspire existing and potential supporters.
• Collaborate with the Core Team to design and execute campaigns that raise awareness of Union Capital’s impact and increase donor engagement.

Grant Management

• In coordination with Union Capital’s contracted grant writer and ED, identify grant opportunities, manage the proposal process, and oversee grant reporting to ensure Union Capital’s ongoing eligibility for grant funding.
• In coordination with Union Capital’s contracted grant writer, track grant application deadlines, requirements, and reporting obligations to sustain and expand funding from foundation partners.

Development Operations

• Manage development operations, including oversight of donor records, communication, and data management in Salesforce, Mailchimp, and Donorbox.
• Ensure timely data entry, data integrity and lead on reporting for decision-making and donor stewardship.

Team Leadership

• Contribute as a team member to the Union Capital Core Team, supporting programs when applicable.
• Build relationships across the Union Capital community so as to effectively connect with the work, mission, and members of the organization.

Desired Qualifications

• Multiple years of experience in fundraising, with a proven track record in individual and major gifts, corporate partnerships, grant management, and donor relations.
• Demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and corporate partners.
• Ability to create and execute a multi-faceted fundraising plan, incorporating digital, social, and direct mail outreach.
• Experience planning and managing fundraising events.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to craft compelling donor communications and marketing materials that communicate the philosophy, mission and values of Union Capital to external and internal stakeholders.
• Experience working with board members and leveraging their networks to support organizational goals.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work in a diverse environment, building relationships and demonstrating empathy, an ability to listen, and awareness of one’s own biases and privileges.
• A commitment to dismantling systemic racism and holding the organization accountable to its own values.

Compensation & Practices:

Union Capital has a practice of valuing and paying all of our team members the same salary at their position level. Union Capital’s salary for the Director of Development position is $95,000. Union Capital offers a competitive package including health, 403(b), vacation benefits, and a 5-year Restorative Leave (aka sabbatical) policy. The Director of Development will need to be based in the Boston area. UC has a flexible work schedule and work location, with the ability to work remotely on some days and other days required in the Boston office headquarters. Union Capital values applicants’ time and will provide a $500 stipend for all applicants who participate in the final round, regardless of outcome.
