    Position Overview

    Tipping Point Community’s Senior Director of Philanthropy is a talented, dynamic professional with a proven track record building relationships and driving successful fundraising. They play a decisive role in ensuring Tipping Point meets our ambitious short-term and long-term fundraising targets. The Senior Director of Philanthropy oversees all fundraising from individual and institutional donors for the organization. The position manages their own portfolio of major and leadership level donors, serves as the lead staff for the Leadership Council, and oversees the work of four giving officers. This position partners with the Chief Development Officer in setting annual fundraising targets and implementing strategies to achieve them. The Senior Director serves as an ambassador for Tipping Point, representing the organization to a variety of stakeholders, including donors, partners, and grantees.

    This position reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and oversees a team of four fundraising professionals.

    What will you do?

    Fundraising Strategy + Execution

    • Partner with the Chief Development Officer, Development Strategy + Operations Director, and senior Program and Communications + Events team members to set annual and multi-year fundraising strategies and goals, including designing the annual donor engagement calendar.
    • Develop and oversee strategy for all individual and institutional donor identification, qualification, engagement, solicitation and stewardship.
    • Collaborates closely with Development Strategy + Operations Director on moves management to guide donors through the donor cycle effectively, using data and analytics to inform cultivation and solicitation strategies.
    • Oversee institutional grants management to ensure all reports and proposals are produced at a high-quality and within specified timelines.

    Portfolio Management

    • Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of approximately 75-90 donors and prospects with capacity to give $25K+ annually inclusive of a small group of key institutional partners, representing Tipping Point through deep knowledge of our model, an understanding of the programmatic issue areas, and research on the philanthropic landscape.
    • Plan, develop and oversee the implementation of strategies for all donors in the portfolio and independently represent the organization with these donors and prospects.
    • Deliver exceptional stewardship to portfolio of current donors. Continuously research and identify new leads, and work diligently to convert to active donors in order to ensure the ongoing success of Tipping Point’s work.
    • Help inspire and guide donors and prospects to achieve their philanthropic goals by successfully aligning donor interests with Tipping Point’s strategy and educating donors on poverty and Tipping Point’s impact.
    • Strategically leverage Tipping Point’s Board + Leadership Council (LC) members, Executive Team (ET), and other staff and current donors in prospect identification, visits, events and solicitations, as appropriate.
    • Serve as a primary internal and external point-person for development at Tipping Point. Maintain expert familiarity with Tipping Point’s grantmaking model, including strategic initiatives and targeted activities, and clearly describe these to various constituencies.

    Leadership Council Engagement

    • Manage Tipping Point’s Leadership Council, including hands-on relationship management with every member and as a conduit for their relationship to Tipping Point’s CEO. Set and execute individual engagement and fundraising targets for every LC member, including their participation on governance committees, hosting events, engaging their networks, and evangelizing Tipping Point’s work.
    • Manage the Leadership Council as a collective body by designing meaningful group meetings/engagements, fostering consensus among members, and mobilizing their expertise and networks to meet organizational goals.
    • Collaborate with Tipping Point’s internal ET and the LC chairperson to develop and run quarterly LC meetings.
    • Collaborate with the LC chairperson and Nominating Committee to recruit and retain new LC members. Manage the vetting and onboarding process for all new members.
    • Engage various Tipping Point staff and leadership to identify and execute LC-specific events and engagement opportunities.

    Management + Leadership

    • Manage and develop team; establish and hold team accountable for annual performance goals and support identification of professional development opportunities to expand skills and competencies.
    • Set clear team direction that aligns with Tipping Point’s goals, strategy, mission and values
    • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to build annual organizational goals - including fundraising and event goals and key metrics for individual and institutional giving - and set an actionable plan for accomplishing them.
    • In partnership with the Development Strategy + Operations Director, maximize internal meetings by contributing to and/or setting agendas for Donor Strategies, CEO + Development, Program + Development and others as needed.

    What qualifications are we looking for?

    Additionally, the Senior Director of Philanthropy must have:

    • A robust track record of relevant experience in seven-figure fundraising from individual and institutional donors with a focus on prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
    • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others through persuasive and compelling messaging.
    • Experienced relationship manager with the ability to build collaborative relationships both within Tipping Point and with external parties (e.g. partners, supporters, etc.).
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams of high-performing individuals with a focus on encouraging collaboration between team members in order to attain a common goal.
    • A strong ability to understand the social and business landscape that Tipping Point operates in and sees ahead to future possibilities; translates possibilities into breakthrough strategies and paints a compelling picture of the vision and strategy that motivates others to action
    • Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and ability to tackle complex processes confidently and efficiently; proficiency with identifying issues, effectively structuring problems, analyzing data to produce insights and generate wise, actionable recommendations.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a broad array of stakeholders, use ideation and creativity to approach work, remain adaptable in a constantly shifting environment, and stay focused on quality.
    • Commitment to Tipping Point’s mission and values and ability to operate with the highest degree of integrity in representing the organization.
    • Knowledge of or experience in Bay Area philanthropy.

    Salary + classification

    Tipping Point is committed to paying competitive wages. In an effort to increase equity, because we know that salary negotiations tend to have an unfair bias, we do not participate in a salary negotiation process for any candidate. We will make our best offer, and it will be the same regardless of the candidate. The annual starting salary for the Senior Director of Philanthropy role is $200,000. This position meets the exemption requirements as defined by state and federal law. Exempt employees are paid on a salaried basis, and their salary is intended to constitute their entire regular compensation, regardless of the number of hours they work; therefore, exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

    Hybrid Work Environment

    Tipping Point is committed to the safety of our staff and to facilitating connection and community with one another. While we were remote for almost two years, we are a highly in-person culture and have moved into a hybrid work environment. While managers have some discretion over the schedule, teams are generally expected to be in person Tuesday-Thursdays. All other days staff may choose to work in the office or remotely. Please note that in a constantly changing environment, Tipping Point may adjust this arrangement as it sees the need to.
