    Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 27,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer). MRNY is a newly unionized workplace.

    MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

    Current Opening:

    We are seeking a dynamic organizer to join the team at Make the Road New York as the FEW Coalition Coordinator for the 2025 New York State legislative session, to end on June 15, 2025. The FEW Coalition Coordinator will join a powerful coalition of member-based community organizations, labor unions, direct service providers, litigators, and economic analysts. With the support of the Fund Excluded Workers Coalition Steering Committee, this position will help drive a collective campaign to advance legislation to expand unemployment insurance to 1.2M New Yorkers excluded from state and federal benefits, ie: those who are undocumented or work in the cash economy. The candidate should possess expertise in grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigns.

    The FEW Coalition Coordinator is responsible for maintaining relationships with coalition affiliates and overseeing the work to ensure the coalition's objectives and goals are achieved. This position will engage in the following: research, power analysis, campaign planning, team and task design, internal communications structure, developing ladders of engagement, narrative strategy, partner engagement, and policy design.

    Please note that Make the Road is currently operating under a hybrid model where staff are required to be in the office a minimum of two days per week. This policy is subject to change. The selected candidate should be prepared to work out of any of our offices, as the work requires.

    Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with strategic partners in key organizations and geographies and support the select local, regional, and statewide meetings to represent the coalition.
    • Facilitate and support the FEW Coalition steering committee in policy design and implementation, stakeholder engagement, legislative advocacy, event planning and more.
    • Hold regular meetings with issue-area leads to develop strategy and volunteer engagement pathways; create work plans and provide support, resources and accountability.
    • Build and facilitate relationships with state elected officials staff and lead policy design alongside key affiliates of the coalition
    • Facilitate and process Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with coalition partners, track and maintain coalition-related expenses, and FEW steering committee with grant proposals and drive successful implementation of fundraising objectives.
    • Manage coalition social media accounts, including drafting posts and creating graphics to support campaign visibility and engagement

    Requirements:

    • Eligible to work in the US
    • Required to be fully vaccinated with and FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment
    • Bachelor’s degree or at least 4 years of work experience in a job with skills that are transferable to this specific position;
    • At least three years of experience in leadership roles in a campaign. This may be a grassroots campaign, political campaign, union organizing campaign, or anything that you believe demonstrates you can design and effectively run a campaign for social change, working with partners and in coalition across issues and constituencies.
    • Demonstrated experience in implementing shared campaign objectives
    • At least two years of experience (in a paid or volunteer role) working with organizational partners and supporting their growth, political education, and leadership development ● Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting people with very different experience levels, learning styles, and communication styles.
    • Demonstrated project management experience with multiple teams across an organization and/or community.
    • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, the ability to flex communication styles to adapt to different cultural environments.

    Job Competencies:

    • Strong facilitation and agenda-setting skills
    • Experience organizing data and developing internal and external communications
    • Willingness to support and bring creativity to emergent areas of work
    • History of engaging in anti-racism and anti-oppression training and desire to continue doing this work.
    • Team player - cooperative, communicative, and willing to support fellow team members

    MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $58,200 to $65,550
