    826 National is the largest youth writing network in the United States, amplifying the impact of writing and publishing centers across the US, along with the words of thousands of young writers. We serve as an international proof point for writing as a tool for young people to ignite and channel their creativity, explore identity, advocate for themselves and their community, and achieve academic and professional success.

    Currently the 826 Network has nine chapters in nine major US cities: Boston, Chicago, Detroit/Ann Arbor, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, with approximately 710,000 students accessing free programs and resources provided by chapters and 826 Digital. We aim to reach 1 million students annually by 2026.

    826 NATIONAL TEAM

    Based in San Francisco, our team is a collaborative group of passionate professionals dedicated to championing young writers, furthering equitable, effective, and joyful writing education on a national stage, and supporting 826 chapters and 826 Digital.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Development Manager reports directly to the Chief Development Officer, and works closely with the entire 826 National team to execute resource development strategy.

    This is a full-time, hybrid position, with the majority of business conducted remotely, along with a minimum of one day per week in person, as well as, in-person donor meetings and events as required. At times, this position requires travel and out-of-hours work.

    The Development Manager will help execute an aggressive fundraising plan that incorporates new and ongoing initiatives including donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, a recurring giving program, events, and sponsor recruitment to secure revenue to support 826 National during its next chapter of growth. The Development Manager will assist in growing our entire fundraising pipeline through the comprehensive management of a dynamic portfolio that includes individuals, corporate, and foundation donors. Other duties will be: drafting proposals/reports, supervising an intern, and managing event logistics. This role will serve as the organization’s development “knowledge hub,” and will be a critical member of a dynamic team helping to grow the 826 National Network.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage a dynamic portfolio of diverse donors to help contribute to a comprehensive, progressive revenue target of $3 million. This includes identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
    • Using the Salesforce database, utilize data and reports to effectively track activity, donor engagement, and various moves management in the cultivation and stewardship of donors to evaluate ROI and donor impact;
    • In partnership with the CDO, plan and execute various campaigns and activities including an annual giving campaign, Giving Tuesday campaign, board campaign, peer-to-peer campaigns, third party events, and donor cultivation and stewardship activities;
    • Manage integration partnerships that optimize our current systems like Wealth Engine and Cirrus.
    • Assist in the creation of fundraising assets including but not limited to event sponsorship collateral, case statements, and brochures.
    • Help to execute event logistics;
    • Assist in screening the donate@email address, taking meeting notes, general departmental administration tasks, and lead the monthly network development cohort call.
    • Manage volunteers as necessary for the advancement of partnerships and fundraising strategy.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
    • 2+ years prior experience in sales or fundraising.
    • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
    • Ability to effectively interface with donors, team members, and Board of Directors.
    • Must be comfortable engaging individuals on the phone, Zoom, and in person.
    • Superior time management and organization skills.
    • Ability to multitask, collaborate with others, and be a team player.
    • Experience with integrating social media into event planning and execution.
    • Internet research capabilities and email savviness.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Proficient with using and managing donor databases and integrated marketing platforms.
    • Experience with Salesforce, Mailchimp, Canva, and Classy is a plus.
    • Passion for the 826 mission.
