    Liberation Ventures Overview

Liberation Ventures (LV) is building the power to win federal, comprehensive reparations for Black Americans. LV is a field catalyst and intermediary, and exists to support the incredible field of people and organizations across the country building momentum toward that North Star. LV is guided by five organizational beliefs.

LV’s three pillars of work include:

    • Mobilizing abundant resources by investing in organizations that accelerate the reparations movement & co-creating grantmaking strategies with practitioners in the field.
    • Spreading irresistible narratives by building narrative power, amplifying the stories of our movement, and framing reparations as the issue of our time
    • Strengthening movement capacity through relationship and connective tissue building, research, and tailored organizational development support.

Liberation Ventures is laying the groundwork to secure racial repair, at scale, in our lifetime. Position Summary

This position is an exciting opportunity to build the Donor Organizing team at Liberation Ventures from the ground up. This person will work directly with the Co-Founder & CEO, Aria Florant, to exponentially increase the amount of resources flowing into the reparations movement. Over the last 4 years, Aria has raised almost $25M as the sole fundraiser in the organization – and now needs an exceptional #2 to take this work to the next level. Our goal is to raise $200M for the next decade of growth in the reparations movement.

    Why This Role

Donor Organizing at Liberation Ventures is not like traditional fundraising; we take a highly relational approach, and view our funders as true partners in the work. We view fundraising as organizing; as a result, prior fundraising experience is not necessarily a requirement for this role. We need someone hungry; this role is not for the perfectionist, nor for the faint of heart. We are aiming big, moving quickly, and learning a ton as we go. For the right person ready to dive in, it is a unique opportunity to:

    • Build deep relationships with influential HNWIs and philanthropic institutions
    • Work directly with the CEO at a startup, growing organization
    • Build skills at a rapid pace, including major gift strategy, donor community building, systems building, crafting strategic and compelling messages on critical racial justice issues of our time, and more

    Core Responsibilities

    • Donor Organizing Strategy & Execution (50%): This person will help execute a $200M fundraising effort to support LV’s 10-year grantmaking strategy to make reparations common sense and commonplace in the US. This includes helping to stand up a multiracial community of donors pooling their dollars to support the strategy. Key responsibilities include:
      • Help design and launch a national donor community for reparations from A–Z, including sourcing and cultivating membership, designing experiences for members, executing donor events, and more
      • Develop and execute additional donor organizing strategies tailored to specific segments/audiences in the philanthropic sector (e.g., place-based, young donors, wealth advisors, etc)
    • Relationship Building (35%): This person will build and maintain relationships with LV’s growing list of 70+ donors, helping to keep them up to date about movement progress, challenges, and opportunities. They will also source new potential donors through in-person events, conferences, and their own network. Key responsibilities include:
      • Building and managing relationships with a subset of LV donors, keeping them up to date on LV progress and identifying opportunities for them to support the organization beyond the dollars
      • Attending events and conferences to source and build relationships with new donors
    • Systems Building (15%): This person will help maintain donor organizing systems within LV. Key responsibilities include:
      • Drafting bi-annual donor communications
      • Conducting donor research and maintaining up to date information systems
      • Drafting grant proposals and narrative reports

    Key Qualifications

    • Mission and Values Alignment: cares deeply about LV’s mission, and can speak passionately, clearly, and personally about the imperative of our work.
      • Deep belief in Liberation Ventures’ mission
      • Demonstrated commitment to LV’s beliefs in practice.
      • Strong understanding of LV’s field of work — racial, economic, and gender justice and their intersections, and the systems and structures that cause ongoing harm in these areas.
      • Able to hold multiple truths at the same time related to running a liberatory organization within a capitalist system, and able to take decisive action from that position.
    • Exceptional relationship builder: can build trust quickly with all different types of people, across lines of difference, especially race
      • Able to see, name, and navigate power and privilege dynamics in a group and contribute to a working environment where all people are equally valued, feel cared for, and are accountable to each other.
      • Experienced community builder; knows how to design experiences tailored to donors that are relational, impactful, and accountable
      • Track record of building strong partnerships with team members at all levels of an organization; relational, collaborative approach to management and leadership.
    • Exceptional strategic thinker; able to develop nuanced, informed perspectives about how to engage donors most effectively
      • Experience serving as a thought partner and strategic advisor to executive leaders as well as reporting to the board of directors. Excellent at managing up.
      • Has an organizer’s mindset: willing to share personal stories to connect to others on critical issues, and is always thinking about how to get people involved
    • Exceptional project management skills: strong attention to detail and can effectively manage equitable, streamlined processes with multiple stakeholders
      • Clear and structured written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
      • Track record of exceptional execution; able to act with minimal oversight to move projects from A-Z.
      • Highly organized and able to manage multiple streams of work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
      • Attentive to detail and accountable to others; can operate at a quick pace with minimal oversight
      • Able to manage multiple contractors to deliver high-quality, timely, aligned services to Liberation Ventures.
      • Extremely low-ego; no task is too small
