    Summary

    The Communications Director of Reproductive Equity Now leads press strategy, public relations, message development, and digital content strategy for our rapidly growing organization. In close collaboration with State Directors, the Communications Director will expand issue and brand awareness to educate and inspire target audiences, and will build the organization’s media presence across New England. The Communications Director will also work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership team to ensure close collaboration between our communications, programmatic, and fundraising efforts. The Communications Director reports to the Deputy Director and manages a growing communications team.

    Key Responsibilities

    Area #1: Develop and Execute Media and Public Relations Strategy

    • Work collaboratively with the Deputy Director to set organizational media and public relations strategy with a focus on increasing our profile during a period of growth.
    • Execute media and public relations strategy, while building press relationships across Repro Equity Now’s regional footprint (currently CT, MA, and NH). The Communications Director will serve as the primary point of contact for the press, field press inquiries, proactively pitch stories, and coordinate press responses and interviews.
    • Create key messaging documents for advocacy, programmatic, and development campaigns, including talking points and briefing materials for media appearances.
    • Work with coalition partners on the development of coalition-wide communications content and strategy.
    • Support and grow the organization’s thought leadership in the national repro space.

    Area #2: Produce, Write, and Edit Communications Collateral

    • Oversee the production of traditional press materials including press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and blogs.
    • Produce speeches and oral legislative testimony for the President, State Directors, and other departments as needed.
    • Provide editorial guidance and assistance for constituent communications such as emails and action alerts.
    • Edit, publish, and grow Reproductive Equity Now’s biweekly newsletter, Repro Roundup.
    • Produce and publish the organization’s Annual Report, outlining the successes of the past year with an eye toward fundraising and development.

    Area #3: Oversee Digital and Social Media Strategy

    • Create and oversee the organization’s social media and digital strategy to reach new followers, with a focus on younger audiences.
    • Working with outside consultants, manage the creation and placement of issue ad campaigns across New England to drive brand awareness and aid advocacy and public education efforts.
    • Diversify digital media content, including by using a variety of videos, graphics, and images, to grow our online presence and reach audiences with our message in different formats.
    • With the Digital Communications Officer, grow and foster a digital community of advocates, volunteers, and supporters who will share our mission and message.

    Area #4: Communications staff supervision and support

    • Manage and mentor a growing communications team (currently, Communications Officer and Digital Communications Officer), fostering their professional growth and development.
    • Oversee and manage the work of consultants, as necessary.
    • Collaborate with the Deputy Director to ensure communications capacity is allocated equitably across states, advocating for necessary support and tools to achieve organizational goals.

    Qualifications

    • Four to five years’ experience working with press in journalism or media relations, developing and executing communication strategies that influence campaign results and organizational profile.
    • Excellent news sense and communications expertise.
    • Clear, concise, and highly skilled written and oral communication.
    • Proven networking skills to help Reproductive Equity Now capitalize on breaking stories and influence change.
    • Exceptional ability to pitch news stories and draft content, and knowledge of a variety of audiences.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
    • Proven ability to work independently and in a team to solve problems.
    • Experience overseeing and managing communications staff and consultants
    • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
    • Willingness to stay with the organization for a minimum of two years.

    Location

    The Communications Director must reside in Massachusetts, Connecticut, or New Hampshire. This is a hybrid position with travel required to meet the needs of the role.

    Compensation and Benefits

    The Communications Director is a full-time, 40-hour per week, exempt position. The salary range is $85,000-$90,000 in addition to a generous benefits package including comp time, health and dental insurance, and a retirement account with employer match.
