    Description

    Position Overview

Public Justice is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Controller to join our nonprofit organization. Public Justice takes on the biggest systemic threats to justice of our time – abusive corporate power and predatory practices, the assault on civil rights, and the destruction of the earth’s sustainability. We connect high-impact litigation with strategic communications and the strength of our partnerships to fight these abusive and discriminatory systems and win social and economic justice. In particular, we ensure access to the civil justice system, protect the civil rights of students, boldly lead efforts to reform the industrial agriculture system, fight to end qualified immunity and modern-day debtor’s prisons, enforce the nation’s most important environmental laws, and much more.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive, hands-on individual who is passionate about making a difference in the community and has an exceptional background in nonprofit accounting. The Assistant Controller supports the effective financial management of the organization by ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and leading the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the organization.

    Responsibilities

    • Organize and manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statement closing activities to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial rerecords. Review and post journal entries, account reconciliations, and review/manage all general ledger accounts and financial statements.
    • Oversee and maintain the organization’s financial systems including QuickBooks, Ramp, and Bill.com. Ensure the accuracy of accounting by assigning and/or reviewing the correct account and functional expense category for all transactions.
    • Support the Vice President, Finance in providing leadership and oversight to the outsourced accounting team.
    • Lead the payroll function including preparing semi-monthly payroll runs within Paychex, reconciling the payroll reports to accounting records, and managing registrations and compliance with federal and state payroll agencies.
    • Assist with the management of the timeline and activities supporting the annual financial audit and Form 990 preparation process.
    • Support the oversight of compliance of financial internal controls and adherence to organization’s financial policies.
    • Support the annual budget process by generating budget worksheets, collaborating with budget managers on budget decision making processes, and maintaining the integrity of the project’s timeline.
    • Collaborate across the organization to advance organization-wide financial initiatives, including providing support for grant management activities.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational financial strategies.
    • Support ad-hoc finance projects as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
    • 5+ years of experience in a similar role within a nonprofit organization
    • Proficiency in using financial software QuickBooks, Ramp, and Bill.com
    • Expertise in Microsoft Excel
    • Demonstrated experience with nonprofit accounting including grant management and grant reporting requirements.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-financial staff.
    • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
    • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
