    Job Description:

We have an opening for a part-time position to help Colorado become a national leader in climate action.

350 Colorado’s mission is to work locally to help build the global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis and transition to a sustainable future. Science and social justice demand that we radically change the way our society contemplates, develops, and uses energy if we are to avert catastrophic global climate change. It’s clear that life as we know it is in peril due to climate change and that future generations and those least responsible for causing climate change will bear the brunt of the impacts. We believe that organized grassroots people power is the only way we can expect to counter the influence of the fossil fuel industry in our society. 350 Colorado is dedicated to achieving three primary organizational goals: Movement Building, Keeping Fossil Fuels in the Ground, and Promoting Local Solutions.

350 Colorado is hiring a community organizer to aid in the growth and success of our 350 Colorado Springs team and climate organizing in the Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak region of Colorado. The 350 Colorado Springs organizer will recruit, train, and engage volunteers in climate action both at the local and statewide level, with the Movement Building Director and other teammates.

    Status: Contract position, part-time

Reports to: Movement Building & Volunteer Director (and secondarily to our Executive Director)

    Essential Functions:

High level: Build the local climate movement!

    • Grow local teams’ membership and the local climate movement by recruiting new volunteers in the communities and engaging them in both local and statewide climate action, depending on their interests.
    • Meaningfully engage, coordinate, and delegate to volunteers and check in with them to support and maximize volunteer retention.
    • Recruit and work in tandem with volunteer chairs/leads of local teams.
    • Plan and co-lead outreach and education events and meetings on climate issues for the local communities.
    • Strengthen and develop new partnerships with other local organizations to create a robust coalition for climate action in these areas.
    • Team Coordinators can expect to spend approximately 10% of time supporting statewide efforts and about 90% of time supporting local team efforts.
    • Assist with local teams’ fundraising and campaign coordination.

Weekly: (working with chairs/leads of local teams)

    • Recruit, onboard, and coordinate new activists, and check in with them to support and maximize volunteer retention.
    • Meaningfully engage and plug volunteers into various roles and tasks, based upon team needs and volunteers’ interests and expertise.
    • Send emails to local team lists to communicate opportunities, updates, and actions that activists can be a part of.
    • Promote the teams’ activities both through social media and traditional media, with a goal of 4-6 press hits per team per year from press releases, press conferences, letters to the editor, opinion editorials, and postings in events calendars (online, radio and print).
    • Track numbers of participants and leadership committee members at each meeting, training and event, and report on tracking documents.

    Monthly:

    • Support the Local Team Leadership Council in planning (e.g by co-facilitating monthly planning calls) and organizing monthly outward-facing team meetings and outreach/educational events about climate issues for the local community to recruit new members and engage existing ones.
    • Aim to recruit, engage and retain at least 5 new local team members monthly for each team and 1 new leadership council member monthly for each team, until an ideal number of leadership council members are reached.
    • Seek out and participate in local outreach opportunities, such as events that your team can have a table at in order to engage the community in campaign opportunities and recruit new members to sign petitions and get involved.
    • Strengthen and develop new partnerships with other nonprofit organizations to create a robust coalition for climate action locally.
    • Track progress toward strategic plan goals in tracking spreadsheet to report out at least monthly.

    Quarterly or Annually:

    • Work with the Movement Building & Volunteer Director to co-host and facilitate grassroots organizing climate leadership workshops (at least 1 annually) for local residents to help volunteers step up the ladder of engagement and establish a strong network of volunteer leaders.
    • Facilitate strategic planning toward team goals with your Local Team Leadership Councils, at least once per year (and share updates at least quarterly).
    • Assist with fundraising:
      • Monthly giving donor recruitment goal of 10 additional monthly donors per team by end of year.
      • Support local team fundraising efforts to cover the costs of events, materials, supplies and other needs that arise.
      • Local team coordinators assist 350CO’s Development Director in drafting grants to support the local teams as needed.
      • Participation in 350CO’s mid- and end-of-year fundraisers - supporting via emails, phonebanking, social media, etc.

In Colorado Springs we will focus on:

    • Making El Paso County a leader in climate action with a commitment to 100% renewable energy, ideally by 2035.
    • The continued just and equitable transition in the Martin Drake campaign.
    • Educating the local community on how to be more environmentally friendly through regenerative agriculture, reducing carbon footprint, including creating a more walkable, bikeable community
    • Light support is also provided to the CSSU Divest campaign.
    • These statewide campaign efforts (below) are on-going opportunities for the team as well:

Statewide campaigns to engage volunteers in: (Note: other staff lead the campaigns referenced below)

    • Educate the local community on how to take action on climate change and support statewide efforts for a rapid, just transition off fossil fuels and toward renewable energy solutions, especially by engaging in advocacy and advancing stronger policies at local, state and occasionally federal levels (via governmental bodies and regulatory agencies).
    • Support efforts for a just transition off fossil fuels, with a focus on phasing out fracking.
    • Promote climate solutions, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and regenerative agriculture.
    • Promote divestment of public funds from fossil fuels, i.e. halting municipal banking contracts with banks financing fossil fuels, promoting PERA (Public Employee Retirement Association) divestment, and supporting student-led university divestment campaigns.
    • Work to promote JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion) in our organizing for climate action and justice.

    Required qualifications:

    • 1-2+ years of experience in volunteer management, community organizing or related field, with group facilitation experience

    • Interpersonal skills and ability to inspire, motivate and delegate to others.
    • Social media proficiency.
    • Willingness to learn customer relationship management (CRM) software (database, email, fundraising system) and Wordpress website maintenance.
    • Understand 350CO’s JEDI principles and have a demonstrated understanding of the role that inequity plays in our society and in movement-building, and have demonstrated an ability to effectively manage across differences.
