    POSITION SUMMARY

    Senior Communications Officer

    Type of Position: Exempt, Full Time

    Location: Remote; candidates should be able to overlap with business hours (9 am to 5 pm) in the U.S. Central Time Zone for a minimum of five hours each day.

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic communications professional to join our growing team at a pivotal moment in the organization’s trajectory. Following a period of rapid growth and a recent leadership transition, WEI has adopted a new strategic plan to guide the organization’s work over the next five years.

    This newly established position of Senior Communications Officer recognizes the critical role communications play in amplifying WEI’s mission and strategic goals. As a key contributor to the Communications Team, this role will focus on expanding WEI’s presence across platforms and channels, developing compelling content tailored to diverse audiences, and playing a vital part in donor engagement strategies. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative professional passionate about advancing human rights and justice at the intersection of gender and disability.

    ABOUT WOMEN ENABLED INTERNATIONAL

    As feminists with disabilities and allies, Women Enabled International (WEI) advances human rights and justice at the intersection of gender and disability to challenge exclusionary, unjust systems and support the leadership and center the voices of women, girls, and gender-diverse people with disabilities globally.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Senior Communications Officer maintains and expands Women Enabled International’s presence across different platforms and channels. As a key part of the Communications Team, the person in this role will translate WEI’s many streams of content into suitable products for different audiences and channels.

    The ideal candidate will also be an excellent writer, who can create both short and long-form content to promote audience engagement, with a special focus on donor communications. The person in this role will provide insights into WEI’s donor communication strategy and will be a critical partner in helping us determine the needs of our current and potential funders.

    Key responsibilities include:

    Content and Communications:

    • Plans, develops and disseminates information designed to keep the public informed of the organization's programs, accomplishments, or point of view, with moderate levels of guidance and direction.
    • Drives WEI’s social media strategy, including planning, development, ideation, and digital content management.
    • Works with contractors and interns to create, package, and schedule multimedia content (Threads, Instagram decks, Instagram reels, infographics, and short-form videos) that is suitable for social media channels.
    • Leads specific content efforts to engage key donors and funders through tailored, multi-channel approaches.
    • Identifies opportunities to pitch and produce social-first content that will elevate the experience of our varying audiences.
    • Creates and deploys content campaigns that appeal to the broader community of feminists, activists, organizers, and funders around the world.
    • Creates and manages campaigns for WEI’s special initiatives such as the Strategic Plan, Annual Reports, end-of-year fundraising, and major announcements, to cite a few examples.
    • Assists with writing, editing, posting, and updating content, including routine website maintenance and regular content updates.
    • Assists with content translation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
    • Collaborates with the team to maximize the reach of our stories, work, impact and ensures we are meeting our growth and engagement goals.
    • Ensures that WEI is an early adopter of the latest social media trends and opportunities.
    • Attends events as needed to support audiovisual documentation: photos, audio, and video footage, as needed.

    Public Relations:

    • Monitors our digital channels to identify potential issues quickly and share with leadership for direction before acting.
    • Collaborates with the Director of Communications in the creation of media-centered content, including press releases, articles, and marketing materials, to communicate the organization's initiatives and achievements.
    • Assists in the response to inquiries and provides information to promote the organization’s mission and activities.
    • Supports the creation and dissemination of consistent and positive messaging and visual representation to guarantee organizational visibility.

    Team Operations:

    • Collaborates with WEI’s Director of Communications to strengthen the communications department by helping design communications infrastructure and core systems and processes.
    • Works with WEI’s Director of Communications to collect, measure and interpret performance metrics of social media content initiatives with strategic recommendations for how to optimize content efforts moving forward.

    Supervisory Duties:

    • May be required to supervise contractors and interns to develop and publish content that is engaging for general audiences and funders.
    • Provides communications practical support to WEI’s staff as needed.
    • Serves as a champion of WEI’s mission, vision, and values internally to foster a positive organizational culture and create a collaborative and impactful work environment.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • A demonstrated ability and proven-track record creating engaging content across a range of topics, for a variety of audiences, in different formats, for different channels, and for multi-cultural audiences.
    • Proven success creating engaging communications products for donors and funders at all levels.
    • Advanced proficiency in Spanish, as WEI Communications are developed in both English and Spanish.
    • Expertise in successfully disseminating multimedia products to expand organizational reach and engagement.
    • Experience working with nuanced and complex topics, capable of drawing out a simple message and reframing it for different audiences and platforms.
    • Proven track record creating digital content and managing content projects from concept to launch, including video development and creation.
    • Familiarity with human rights, intersectional feminism, and/or disability rights and justice. Knowledge of/lived experience with the challenges and barriers faced by women and/or gender-diverse people with disabilities preferred.
    • Understanding of the non-profit sector and its unique dynamics, including fundraising strategies, donor relations, and advocacy efforts.
    • Proficiency with digital communication, content creation, graphic design, and social media tools and technologies.
    • Advanced written and verbal communication with the ability to adapt communication styles for the speaker and the audience.
    • Attention to detail and ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    • Deep knowledge of the social media landscape and a strong news sense.
    • Understands that content and language are a fundamental part of increasing organizational visibility.
    • Capable of building rapport to imagine and create intuitive, accessible, and easy-to-understand multi-channel content.
    • Strong interpersonal skills that allow them to work in a multicultural environment.

    Technical Skills 

    • Experience working with different social media platforms, including but not limited to: Threads, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
    • Proficiency with design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva); video production tools and processes (iMovie, Final Cut, Adobe Premier); social media management tools (Hootsuite, Agorapulse, and others).
    • Working knowledge of project management tools (Asana, Airtable, Trello, etc.); mailing services (Mailchimp, Substack, Keela, or others); Content Management Systems (Wordpress, Squarespace, Droopal, or others).
    • Experience with analytics including Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, Google Analytics, and other measuring tools.
    • Knowledge of digital marketing and advertising is a plus.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Preferably a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field or equivalent work experience.
    • At least 5+ years of professional experience in strategic communications and/or content creation, with a proven track record of success in promoting non-profit organizations and advocacy campaigns.

    *Final compensation for this position will be determined based on location, cost of living, and cost of employment in your region/country, based on WEI’s current compensation framework. For transparency, here are indicative values for compensation in a few different cities (these values are all in USD): Mexico: $68,917; Chile: $56,094; Switzerland: $80,637; Kenya: $65,393; India: $63,185; Fiji: $63,355.
