    Collective REMAKE is a democratically run non-profit (501C3) implementing Co-operative Education and Co-operative Business Development (CEAD) programming in South Los Angeles with communities impacted by high rates of incarceration.

    The Co-operative Business Development Manager will play an integral role in the co-design, implementation and management of Collective REMAKE’s Co-operative Business Development Hub. The Co-operative Business Development Manager will provide technical, organizational, and leadership development support to teams of 3+ people working to develop co-operative businesses that will provide dignified work to its members and bring needed services to the community. The person in this position will initially focus on supporting and managing an Urban Garden, Beautification, and Recycling co-operative that is in development.

    As a worker-led non-profit, new hires at Collective REMAKE will become part of the democratic decision-making process. Workers take responsibility for specific tasks, based on collectively defined job descriptions and participate in building the broader vision of the organization. All workers are part of operational conversations on a daily basis. New hires will participate in a one-year orientation and training period before becoming a voting worker member.

    Responsibilities

    Co-operative Business Development Management (85%)

    • Support the development, implementation, and management of the Co-operative Business Hub, in collaboration with Collective REMAKE staff and board.
    • Provide guidance and mentorship to co-operative business teams, fostering leadership skills to ensure effective self-management and decision-making in adherence to the principles and values of co-operatives and sustainability.
    • Develop and implement co-operative business plans, feasibility pilot projects, budgets, operational plans, and scaling strategies in collaboration with co-operative business worker members.
    • Provide co-facilitation and technical assistance in Advanced Co-operative Education and Development Workshops, as needed.
    • Manage collaboration with outside contractors, consultants, and stakeholder partners to support co-operative projects.
    • Assist in identifying wraparound support needs of worker members and participating in restorative justice practices as necessary.
    • Travel to and potentially provide transportation to worksites to support the development of worker members’ projects on the ground, including the development of the Urban Gardening, Beautification, and Recycling projects.
    • Attend appropriate co-operative events and conferences as designated by staff.
    • Manage regular work sessions and communications with co-op teams; including creating agendas, co-facilitating meetings, supporting democratic decision-making, defining tasks, tracking attendance, keeping contact lists updated and keeping team members informed.

    Fundraising (5%)

    • Assist with grant research and grant reporting related to co-operative development projects.
    • Attend meetings with potential funders associated with co-operative development projects.
    • Attend annual organizational fundraising events.
    • Participate in webinars on grant opportunities.
    • Support crowdfunding campaigns and fundraising initiatives.

    Administrative Support (10%)

    • Attend weekly staff meetings.
    • One-time participation in Collective REMAKE Introduction CEAD workshop series (a criterion for all staff).
    • Participate in participatory facilitation training as designated by staff.
    • Manage co-operative development calendar, events, programming invitations, and Zoom events.
    • Assist with managing online presence for developing co-operatives on social media and website, e-newsletter.
    • Other tasks as necessary.

    The tasks and responsibilities related to the Co-operative Business Development Manager position may change as the organization and the co-operative projects develop.

    Qualifications

    • Deep understanding and active adherence to Co-operative Principles and Values and the Principles of Sustainability.
    • Entrepreneurial and business start-up experience.
    • Experience with the development of financial projections and proformas (assessing feasibility) and budgeting.
    • Experience mediating and de-escalating conflict within teams, particularly in a co-operative or collaborative environment.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to provide social-emotional and professional support to worker members.
    • Experience working with people and communities impacted by incarceration.
    • Experience with trauma-informed care and healing-centric engagement approaches.
    • Advanced experience with Google Drive, Zoom, WordPress, Constant Contact (or like email marketing platforms), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, social media platforms, and Quickbooks.
    • Knowledge of Adobe Design Suite is a plus.
    • Working Spanish proficiency is a plus.
    • Physical requirements: Physical strength and stamina to perform tasks that require manual labor, such as transporting equipment or materials, and setting up workstations.
    • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 25 pounds, with knowledge of proper lifting techniques to prevent injury.
    • Tolerance for working in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind, with appropriate protective gear.
    • Evidence of legal driver’s license and insurance to drive to various locations around Los Angeles County. Ability to drive different types of vehicles (moped, trucks, etc.), a plus.

    Schedule

    This is a full-time position. Hours will fluctuate based on programming and events. We plan for a start date in mid to late October 2024.
