    Since 1968, Brooklyn A has provided free legal services for low-income residents of Brooklyn, pursuing neighborhood-based mission of justice, empowerment, and community development. For over half a century, we have utilized an array of legal and advocacy strategies—community organizing, affirmative civil rights litigation, and eviction defense to defend the rights of individuals and families. Collaboration with the city, state, and federal officials to enforce housing laws and develop legislative solutions is also an integral part of our strategy. Brooklyn A has three core programs—Preserving Affordable Housing (PAH) Program, Consumer & Economic Advocacy (CEA) Program, and Community & Economic Development (CED) Program—each of which has unique initiatives and plays a vital community role to ensure basic needs are met and fundamental rights affirmed.

    Position Summary:

    The Sr. Accountant is responsible for providing and managing financial and administrative tasks in order to ensure effective, efficient, and accurate financial and accounting operations. They will be responsible for ensuring that accounts payable is accurately processed and reconciled in the general ledger in accordance with established policies and procedures. In addition, the Sr. Accountant will participate in the organization’s federal and city audit preparation and managing government contract/grant expense tracking and reporting processes.

    Essential Job Responsibilities:

    • Manage the daily functions of accounts payable, general ledger, project accounting, and cash management ensuring that appropriate accounting practices and internal controls are maintained which verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data;
    • Assist in 3rd party payroll processing, ensuring employee timecards are submitted with supervisor approval and payroll ledgers are balanced;
    • Review accuracy accounts payable function to ensure accuracy of invoice coding in accordance procedure with prior to issuance of checks and ensure no duplication payments are made;
    • Manage the month-end close process, creation of P&L/Balance Sheet reports and preparation of monthly/annual reporting;
    • Responsible for the preparation, generation, and maintenance of all financial reports and voucher submissions;
    • Support government contract audits by preparing requested documentation ahead of time and serving as a point person for all communications;
    • Review invoices and coding for assigned contracts to ensure proper classification;
    • Support the preparation of year-end corporate and periodic contract compliance audits, including retrieving supporting documents and back-up information, as requested;
    • Prepare ad-hoc reports for finance team;
    • Provide account analysis for preparation and dissemination of 1099s;
    • Participate and lead special projects focused on continuous improvement of accounting practices;
    • Handle accounting-related matters in accordance with GAAP;
    • Perform other accounting duties as requested.

    Qualifications & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field of experience;
    • Minimum 4 years relevant work experience within a finance department, non-profit government grants and contract experience preferred;
    • Understanding of accrual accounting and knowledge of GAAP principles and federal A-133 audits a plus;
    • Strong financial and analytical skills, including expertise in Excel, and advanced skills including Pivot Tables, V-LOOK UPS and SUMIF formulas;
    • Strong analytical, presentation, communication, and problem-solving skills;
    • Demonstrated experience with MS Office package software and financial management and payroll systems;
    • Ability to analyze, evaluate and summarize financial records for accuracy and conformance to procedures, rules, and regulations;
    • Strong reporting and record keeping skills, including the ability to synthesize lots of quantifiable and qualitative data into clear, plain language and readable charts and checklists;
    • Must be able to work strategically within a team structure as well as independently, multi-task and work under tight deadlines;
    • Dependability, good time management and organizational skills and be attentive to detail; and

    Compensation & Benefits

    Annual salary $75,000—95,000, dependent on years of experience. Benefits highlights - 27 days vacation; employer paid health, dental and vision insurance; employer contribution to 401(k).
