    Descripción

Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 500,000 members and supporters. We hold the government and corporations accountable with campaigns and advocacy before Congress, administrative agencies, and the courts, on issues including money in politics, open government, financial regulation, energy and the climate crisis, fair trade, consumer protection, access to justice, tax policy, workplace safety, drug and medical device safety, healthcare, and more. We are the reason why there are airbags in cars and much more.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Public Citizen’s Climate Program is looking for a smart, creative, resourceful, diligent, and dogged campaigner to advance our advocacy for criminal accountability for the fossil fuel industry. This is a new and exciting policy area, and we are making a big impact.

Public Citizen’s Climate Program is working to open a new front in the fight to hold Big Oil accountable for its role in the climate crisis: criminal prosecution.

Climate-related disasters are damaging property and injuring and killing people in jurisdictions across the United States, and fossil fuel companies have recklessly done more than anyone else to generate these harms. Criminal prosecution, though it is too often targeted at the least powerful in our society, could be directed against these powerful corporations to do what the criminal law is supposed to do—keep us safe from dangerous actors that would do us harm.

That’s why we have been working to build the foundations for climate criminal prosecutions. We are seeking a campaigner to help us build this new program from the bottom up, with a focus on developing and executing organizing and communications efforts to raise the profile of climate prosecution strategies, engage and persuade officials, and identify and elevate the voices of victims and survivors of climate disasters. The role may involve launching or supporting state legislative campaigns as well.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Organizing and advocacy: Identify opportunities where direct action organizing, grassroots advocacy, and traditional as well as out-of-the-box earned media tactics can make a difference. Work with partners to capitalize on these opportunities. Participate actively in coalitions and, where appropriate, organize and lead them. Support the organizing, advocacy, and leadership development of climate survivors.
    • Media and public education: Develop and maintain media relationships and respond to press inquiries, serving as a spokesperson. Help develop media strategies. Write editorial board memoranda, press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and blog posts. Represent Public Citizen in public forums.
    • Supervision: Supervise interns and volunteers who participate in our climate prosecution work.
    • Making things happen: Above all, make a difference. Develop the materials, recruit the partners, hold the meetings, work with the coalitions, lobby the public officials, organize the events—do what’s needed to win.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • 1–8 years of relevant experience in campaigns, organizing, or advocacy.
    • Strong strategic thinking and oral and written communication abilities.
    • Outstanding people skills—you know how to build relationships and get volunteers and partners not just in the door but invested in this work for the long-term.
    • High energy, enthusiasm, persistence, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently, balance multiple priorities, and react to new developments under pressure. Creative and collaborative spirit.
    • Knowledge of and experience in the climate accountability space is a plus, though eagerness and ability to learn quickly work too.
    • Strong commitment to the cause and understanding of its urgency.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary and benefit package. This is a grant-contingent position. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).

    • Salary range: $79,433 - $94,384.
    • Generous benefit package, including:
      • Great medical and dental coverage, 100% paid by PC, including full coverage for children
      • Three weeks paid vacation for new employees, plus five personal days
      • 401K plan with a 5% contribution from PC after one year of employment
      • 12 weeks of paid parental leave after one year of employment
      • Sabbatical after 10 years of employment
      • Student loan reimbursement program

TO APPLY: Submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample combined in a single PDF to climateaction@citizen.org. Please include your last name and the position for which you are applying in the subject line of your email and the filename of the attachment. Women, people of color, people who identify as LGBTQ+, and multilingual speakers are encouraged to apply.
