- PRIMARY OBJECTIVE The Transportation Communications Union/IAM is seeking an energetic and organized individual with excellent research and writing skills for a Research Associate/Brief writer position in our Headquarters Office - Rockville, Maryland.
Work Location – Rockville, Maryland
Work Hours – Full-Time 9am-5pm – NO Remote or Telework
Starting salary is $75,000.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Write claims, appeals, and briefs for arbitration cases concerning contract and discipline issues
- Establish, track, and update data, studies, and contract costing in spreadsheet and table format
- Conduct research; organize and maintain documents
- Use the Internet and databases pertinent to industry research
- Draft correspondence and memoranda
- Review, analyze, and code documents in databases; compile data summaries; summarize arbitration decisions
- Review and analyze Collective Bargaining Agreements
- Assist field representatives in preparing for hearings, arbitration, contract analysis and internal operations
- Assist in contract ratifications
- Assist in educating local union officers and staff regarding writing, advocacy, grievances, discipline hearings, and arbitration
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED
- Knowledge of principles and practices at a level normally acquired through formal paralegal training or its equivalent
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Office, and Adobe
- Demonstrate ability to write clearly and persuasively
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints and adhere to deadlines
- Ability to work independently
- Must be detail oriented
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with staff, union members, and industry personnel; follow instructions effectively and provide information with professional courtesy and tact
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to work core hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST., with the understanding that the duties of the position may from time to time require irregular hours, including weekends
- Ability to occasionally travel as duties require
PREFERRED SKILLS
- A paralegal certification or law degree
- Familiarity with Labor Unions – Railway Labor Act

$75,000 starting
