About The Fair Budget Coalition
Since its founding in 1994, the Fair Budget Coalition (FBC) has brought together community members directly affected by poverty, human and legal services providers, advocates, faith organizations, and concerned District residents to advocate for a District budget and public policies that meaningfully address poverty and human needs. FBC leverages the collective power of its sixty-plus member organizations to accomplish this work, including by helping them increase the civic engagement of those they serve and by creating processes and structures to ensure that those directly affected by poverty are at the forefront of crafting solutions. FBC’s vision is of a just and inclusive D.C. that supports strong and stable communities, allows low-income residents to live in dignity, and makes it possible for all residents to achieve economic security.
Fair Budget Coalition is seeking a Development Manager to support FBC and provide necessary fundraising to an organization seeking to bring power to the budget movement. This is a full-time exempt role, with typical hours ranging from 32-42 per week, depending on the season. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Development Manager will be responsible for the following areas of the organization:
Grant Writing and Reporting
- Research and identify funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies that align with the organization's mission and programs.
- Develop, write, and submit compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and funding applications to secure financial support.
- Maintain a comprehensive grant calendar, tracking deadlines for proposals, reports, and renewals.
- Ensure grant proposals and reports are accurate, compelling, and comply with funder guidelines and requirements.
- Provide detailed post-grant reporting, including financial and narrative outcomes, to demonstrate program effectiveness and compliance.
- Monitor funding trends and proactively recommend adjustments to strategies to increase funding opportunities.
- Maintain organized records of grant submissions, awards, and correspondence in the organization’s database or tracking system.
Funder and Donor Prospecting and Relationship Building
- Research and identify prospective funders and donors, including foundations, corporations, and individual philanthropists, aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
- Maintain a prospect pipeline and regularly update it with new opportunities and insights.
- Prepare and deliver tailored presentations, pitches, and communications to engage potential funders and donors.
- Organize and participate in meetings, site visits, and events to strengthen funder and donor connections.
- Track and analyze donor engagement to identify trends and opportunities for deeper involvement.
- Act as a key point of contact for funders and donors, addressing inquiries and fostering trust and collaboration.
Funder and Donor Engagement
- Develop and execute comprehensive engagement strategies to strengthen relationships with funders and donors, creating personalized communication plans to keep funders and donors informed about the organization's impact and initiatives.
- Plan and coordinate donor appreciation activities, including events, recognition campaigns, and special updates.
- Collaborate with program staff to share compelling stories, data, and achievements that resonate with funder and donor priorities.
- Ensure timely acknowledgments of donations, including letters, calls, and other forms of appreciation.
- Solicit feedback from funders and donors to understand their interests and enhance engagement efforts.
- Track engagement metrics and develop strategies to improve donor retention and deepen relationships.
- Serve as a liaison between funders, donors, and the organization to ensure open communication and alignment of goals.
- Plan, program, and execute annual fundraising Gala: Secure event location and coordinate all event logistics, including event budget, vendors, graphic design and printing of invitation, program, sponsorship materials, and day-of coordination; maintain invitation list, guest list, ticket sales, and secure event revenue from ticket sales, donations, and sponsorship
- Work with Communication Manager to coordinate e-invitation, online donations, website advertising, blog posts, newsletter articles, and any video content
Organizational Development Strategy
- Collaborate with leadership to identify and implement strategies for sustainable organizational growth and capacity building; including individual and corporate giving and foundation giving
- Facilitate cross-departmental communication and collaboration to align fundraising efforts with organizational goals and priorities.
- Lead efforts to create and maintain comprehensive documentation of development activities, policies, and procedures.
- Analyze organizational strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to inform strategic planning and development initiatives.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities for staff and Board Members to strengthen fundraising and donor engagement capabilities.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of development strategies and recommend adjustments to enhance outcomes.
- Stay informed on trends and best practices in nonprofit development to ensure the organization remains innovative and competitive.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board Members to support governance activities, including fundraising planning and Board development.
The Development Manager will create a quarterly update report for the Executive Director and share out during a 1:1 meeting. The incumbent will be responsible for managing relationships with funders, members, and our fiscal sponsor.

Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree preferred
- Two to four years of fundraising experience with a solid background in grant writing, grant management, and donors relationship preferably in a nonprofit organization or a liberatory movement space
- Experience within social justice movement or liberatory movement spaces and organizations (not non-profits) is preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to present complex information to diverse groups (both internal and external)
- Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments within a deadline-driven environment
- A passion for and commitment to social and racial justice with a deep understanding of structural racism and commitment to transformative anti-racism work
- A personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to work collaboratively, share responsibility and credit, and navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues inside and outside of FBC
- Experience and ease with facilitation of meetings and discussions with funders
- Strong time management skills, with an ability to work effectively under pressure and to prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities
- Investment in organizing as a theory of change. A willingness to learn about organizing and create parallel work streams that support organizing as a theory of change

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Newly hired employees are expected to work on-site for the first 90 days of their employment for one day per workweek, and as needed during budget season.
Salary & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $82,000 - 88,000 Candidates eligible for the highest end of the range will have several years experience serving as a lead for fundraising and have experience working in advocacy organizations or movement spaces.
This role is designed with growth in mind. The starting salary reflects an initial investment in the position, with the understanding that there is significant potential for growth based on performance. If the Development Manager successfully meets or exceeds fundraising goals in year one, their salary will be adjusted to reflect the increased financial capacity of the organization.
