    ORGANIZATION: The Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) is a non-profit civil rights organization that serves New York City and the seven suburban New York counties of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. Our mission is to: 1) challenge and eliminate housing discrimination; 2) promote policies that foster open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and 3) strengthen the enforcement of local, state, and federal fair housing laws.

    POSITION SUMMARY: The Fair Housing Specialist works closely with the FHJC’s Investigative Projects Manager and National Field Consultant and provides assistance and serves as a liaison to personnel in an emerging fair housing program in the Capital region (Albany) of New York. The Fair Housing Specialist is responsible for providing support and direct assistance to United Tenants of Albany (UTA) in developing and implementing a full-service fair housing program in the Capital region. The FHJC is seeking an applicant who resides in or near the Capital region and can work remotely from home on this project. The Fair Housing Specialist will work 30 hours per week. The position provides a $45-55,000 salary range commensurate with experience plus benefits including health insurance.

    REPORTS TO: Investigative Projects Manager, National Field Consultant, and Executive Director

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Regularly attend in-person meetings with and provide technical assistance and support to the fair housing staff at UTA on the development and implementation of a full-service fair housing program.
      • Assist UTA to identify and access training, resources, and expertise needed to build the capacity of a new fair housing program in the Capital region.
      • Manage communications between key personnel at the UTA, FHJC, CNY, and other sub-contracting trainers.
      • Research and assist with the development of site lists for systemic testing investigations.
      • Maintain accurate and complete information in electronic files regarding all job duties
      • Assist with the preparation of FHJC quarterly reports to the Office of the Attorney General.
      • Participate in FHJC staff meetings
      • Attend regular monthly meetings of key project participants
      • Participate in fair housing training programs, conferences, and other FHJC activities when authorized to do so.
      • Other duties as requested by the Investigative Projects Manager, National Field Consultant, and Executive Director.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but will consider commensurate experience
    • Prefer at least one year of work experience in fair housing or civil rights fields
    • Exceptional written and oral communication skills a must
    • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse groups of people and organizations
    • Knowledgeable about fair housing and fair lending laws and regulations
    • Computer literate, experienced user of Microsoft applications (e.g. WORD, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, as well as cloud-based software)
    • Reliable, detail-oriented, exceptionally well-organized, and able to work collaboratively and independently
    • Ability to work remotely from home
    • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for local travel are required.
    • Commitment to vigorous enforcement of fair housing and fair lending laws

    Compensación

    This is a 30-hour-per-week position with a comprehensive benefits package, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, life and disability coverage, paid time off, including parental leave, and an employer-matched retirement plan. This position is primarily work from home in the Capital Region of NY and requires access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license.
