Full Time - Based out of our Des Moines, WA office
United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 3000 invites applications for a Political and Community Organizer, based in our Des Moines office with flexibility to travel throughout our entire jurisdiction. This full-time role demands a highly-skilled individual who can integrate political savvy with a deep commitment to community engagement. The ideal candidate will be a proactive advocate for economic, political, and social justice, both within our member's workplaces and across wider community networks. We are seeking a self-starter, someone who instinctively takes initiative and proactively identifies opportunities for impact. This role is for a dynamic individual who excels at enhancing our union's political initiatives, forging collaborative relationships with a wide range of grassroots groups, and creating and executing comprehensive work plans.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, create, and execute comprehensive work plans that effectively align with the union's
- objectives and strategies in political and community organizing.
- Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with organizations focused on labor, faith, racial equity, food, housing, gender and climate justice, and immigration reform, aiming to drive social and economic justice throughout our jurisdiction.
- Lead community participation in contract and political campaigns, employing
- strategic approaches to maximize impact.
- Champion, lead and assist with external organizing efforts in key sectors represented by our union.
- Craft and convey compelling presentations, and strategic plans, communicating the union's objectives and accomplishments to both members, elected officials and community partners.
- Develop and manage systems for tracking and analyzing relevant organizational data, including oversight of member and voter information.
- Represent UFCW 3000 in various political, advocacy, and community coalitions. Facilitate interactions with elected officials, and coordinate member and staff involvement in political, legislative, and community activities.
- Assist in coordinating the union's candidate evaluation and endorsement processes, our electoral field work, including a willingness to phone bank and canvass on evenings and weekends.
- Encourage member involvement in political programs, including the Political Action Advisory Committee and the Community member program through targeted training and individual development initiatives.
- Lead PAC fundraising activities and voter registration efforts.
- Design and implement internal electoral strategies, ensuring robust member engagement and effective collaboration with the communications team.
Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of experience in political, community, and/or labor organizing required.
- Proficient in communication, research, and analytical skills.
- Excellent group facilitation and collective strategizing skills, including an advanced understanding of conflict management and resolution skills.
- Proficient understanding of the electoral and legislative process, including how bills become laws and the dynamics of electoral campaigns.
- Exhibit strong seIf-starting qualities, with an ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in advancing organizational campaigns and initiatives.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a collaborative spirit and the ability to maintain a positive outlook and humor under pressure.
- Genuine enthusiasm for engaging members in the union's political and community work.
- Dedicated to the broader mission of UFCW 3000, with a keen interest in the organization's endeavors.
- Commitment to applying a racial and gender equity lens in work and mobilizing diverse, underrepresented groups.
- Basic computer skills required, including proficiency in Excel; familiarity with the VAN system strongly preferred.
- Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability and willingness to travel within and occasionally outside Washington State.
- Prior experience in union activities, advocacy, legislative affairs, community organizing, or electoral campaign fieldwork is highly desirable.
Salary/ Benefits: Annual Salary range of $74,984.00 to $112,008.00; This position is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement with membership in PNWSU.
