    ABOUT FREEFROM:

    FreeFrom is a national organization founded in 2016 and based in Los Angeles, whose mission is to dismantle the nexus between gender-based violence and financial insecurity. FreeFrom believes in the creativity, resourcefulness, and power that each survivor has to achieve financial independence and to build communities that support individual, intergenerational, and collective healing. We also believe that gender-based violence is a systemic problem in our society which we are severely lacking the infrastructure to address. FreeFrom’s work is to create that infrastructure, by:

    • growing the capacity of the anti-violence movement;
    • supporting survivors with emergency cash grants and our Savings Matching Program;
    • building tech resources for survivors;
    • creating peer networks that facilitate survivors’ collective power building;
    • changing existing laws and advocating for the passage of new, survivor-centered laws at the state and federal level;
    • expanding the data and research that exists to support the field;
    • and bringing in employers, banks, and other institutions as part of the ecosystem working to support survivors’ financial security and safety.

    About the Position

    FreeFrom is looking for a detail-oriented Senior Accounting Manager with a strong background in nonprofit finance, financial strategy, and compliance. This role will lead critical financial functions as we scale, overseeing daily accounting operations, supervising an entry-level bookkeeper, and working closely with the VP of Finance to build financial systems that support our organization's growth.

    This role will serve as a key financial partner to program leads, providing guidance on budgets, compliance, and financial decision-making. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver who can balance both high-level strategy and hands-on execution.

    Key Responsibilities

    Department Leadership & Growth Management

    • Assist in structuring and developing the finance department to prepare for organizational growth and increased financial complexity.
    • Supervise and mentor staff within the finance team, including direct supervision of an entry-level bookkeeper, with a minimum of five years of experience managing individuals and overseeing financial operations.
    • Oversee the accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB, and IRS nonprofit financial regulations.
    • Coordinate with external auditors and assist in year-end audits and compliance filings (IRS Form 990, state charitable filings, etc.).

    Financial Planning & Reporting

    • Lead the development and monitoring of program budgets, collaborating with department heads to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
    • Assist the VP of Finance in preparing quarterly and annual financial statements for leadership and board review.
    • Conduct financial modeling and forecasting to support strategic decision-making and sustainable growth.
    • Manage restricted funding allocations, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and financial regulations.
    • Maintain and improve accounting systems in QuickBooks Online, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and integration with financial reporting.

    Cross-Departmental Collaboration & Problem-Solving

    • Act as a finance liaison for program leads, assisting with budget management, grant reporting, and financial troubleshooting.
    • Develop and implement process improvements to streamline financial workflows and increase operational efficiency.
    • Train and support program leads on financial literacy, budgeting, and compliance best practices.

    Risk Management & Compliance

    • Identify financial risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit financial regulations and internal policies.
    • Strengthen internal controls to safeguard financial integrity and minimize risk.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of 5 - 8 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with experience in grant management, compliance, and program budgeting.
    • Experience preparing financial statements, budgets, and grant reports.
    • 5+ years of experience in QuickBooks Online and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred but not required).
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and nonprofit financial reporting requirements (e.g., IRS Form 990).
    • Proven ability to mentor and train junior staff, with at least 5-8 years in a supervisory role.
    • Experience working with external auditors, funders, and regulatory agencies.
    • Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
    • Ability to work in a trauma-informed and equity-centered environment, fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace.
