    Overall Function

    The Senior Climate Scientist will provide intellectual leadership to expand the capacity of MethaneSAT to produce high-precision CO2 flux data products that can be applied to urban and natural systems. Reporting to a Lead Senior Scientist, the Senior Climate Scientist will work with EDF scientists and external partners to develop, evaluate, and implement new algorithms to derive CO2 flux data from MethaneSAT, and evaluate test cases for potential policy-relevant insights about fine-scale spatio-temporal differences and trends in CO2 emissions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide intellectual leadership and coordination for research projects involving the production and use of new CO2 flux data products from the MethaneSAT mission.
    • Remain current with applications of satellite data for targeting and tracking global decarbonization efforts and relevant scientific literature.
    • Synthesize and communicate insights from recent literature to a multi-disciplinary project team, including EDF scientists, policy experts, and corporate and community partnership specialists, as well as external partners.
    • Ensure scientific integrity of EDF-generated materials.
    • Oversee collaborative research projects with university-based researchers and other experts.
    • Lead in the preparation of scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Attend and represent EDF at external meetings and interact with the scientific community at large.
    • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
    • Independently support other "rapid response" and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.
    • With Development, create donor-facing materials and when needed, meet with key donors to provide updates on the work.
    • Supervise and mentor other staff as appropriate.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in atmospheric science, or relevant physical science or engineering field.
    • At least 5 years' of relevant work experience.
    • Experience generating and working with satellite data products, understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from urban areas and natural systems a plus.
    • Ability to work at the intersection of climate science, technology and public policy and to collaborate effectively with experts across these areas.
    • Demonstrated scientific expertise in cross-disciplinary research, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications and/or involvement in scientific panels.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific information in an advocacy setting and for non-scientific audiences.
    • Initiates and maintains extensive contacts within the scientific community; familiarity with the work of leading experts in the net-zero pathways field.
    • Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail; Strong communication skills.
    • Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work.
    • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
    • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally periodically.
