    Description

    The Organization and Position Background

Haitian Global Health Alliance is a US-based 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides fundraising and communications support for its sister organization, GHESKIO, in Haiti.

GHESKIO (Groupe Haitien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et Infections Opportunistes), a Haitian non-governmental organization was created on May 2, 1982 before AIDS had a name making it the first organization in the world dedicated exclusively to the fight against AIDS. Its original mission of research, training and treatment for HIV/AIDS has been expanded to other sexually transmitted diseases, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and now cardiovascular disease. After the 2010 massive earthquake a global health program was initiated involving the provision of other services: primary and vocational schools, microcredit, job opportunities, women’s empowerment, rape crisis line and provision of chlorine to purify water sources.

In 1987, GHESKIO was recognized as an official independent non-governmental organization by the Haitian Government. In 2000, the Haitian government designated GHESKIO a “Public Utility,” a status reserved for institutions “essential to the welfare of the Haitian people.” For more than 30 years, GHESKIO has served as the Haitian Government’s research and training center for HIV/AIDS, and it is now an internationally recognized center of excellence. GHESKIO has three principal areas of expertise: Providing high quality medical care, conducting research to maximize treatment outcomes for HIV/AIDS and TB in Haiti and across the world, and providing training to other medical staff in Haiti treating patients with infectious and other diseases. GHESKIO's objectives have been to develop public models based on operational research conducted In Haiti to be scaled-up nationwide. GHESKIO operates from 2 large centers located strategically North and South of Port-au-Prince and at 17 community distribution points.

GHESKIO has received uninterrupted funding from the National Institute of Health for 41 years since 1983, Fogarty International Center since 1988, PEPFAR since 2004, the Global Fund since 2003 and private foundations and individuals along with other sources. GHESKIO combines the local knowledge derived from its Haitian roots, Haitian staff and Haitian leadership with scientific rigor resulting from training in Haiti as well as top US institution. it also adopted strict financial controls early in its history that mirror those of private research and clinical institutions in the US and Europe with regular reporting to grant makers including US government agencies.

Haitian Global Health Alliance was created to support the work and development of GHESKIO, primarily by raising funds, securing in-kind donations and providing communications support for GHESKIO.

At a time of crisis in Haiti despite which GHESKIO continues to provide complete healthcare services to its patients, GHESKIO and Haitian Global Health Alliance are investing further in Haitian Global Health Alliance's infrastructure, staffing and expertise to increase its ability to raise funds, raise awareness, and other support as needed for GHESKIO.
