    Job Title: part-time Environmental Educator: Youth Programs (p/t to f/t opportunity after four months)

    Job Location: 100 Gold Street, New York, New York 10038

    Schedule: 20 to 25 hours a week, some weekends required

    Compensation: $23/hour, MetroCard

    The objective of Trees New York's youth program is to work with New York City public school students to raise their awareness of environmental issues while advancing their reading, language, and investigative skills. Students are introduced to urban forestry-related topics like why trees are essential to the urban environment, tree biology, identification and maintenance, and environmental concepts such as the urban heat island effect, stormwater management, and climate change. The program is customized to students' grade level. The target Neiborhood's for this years program are located in the Bronx and Manhattan.

    Program portfolio includes managing and teaching Trees New York's Youth Environmental Literacy Program, Fruit Trees New York, and the Young Urban Forester Internship. Please visit treesny.org to learn more about the programs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

    • Teach and engage students on urban forestry topics to, primarily students in grades 5 through 12
    • Lead outdoor, hands-on projects with students, including tree maintenance and tree planting
    • Coordinate procurement of trees, mulch, cleanup supplies, and tools
    • Travel to and from preliminary meetings for site inspection and meet with program partners
    • Prepare and update the curriculum
    • Partner with schools and community gardens to plant fruit trees and teach lessons on food literacy
    • Monitor program goals and milestones, report metrics, and help draft interim and final reports
    • Complete the Citizen Pruner course and pass the Citizen Pruner Exam
    • Conduct outreach and recruit schools, after school groups, and community gardens to participate in programs
    • Field calls and emails from interested parties about the program
    • General office duties and assist Trees New York staff with special projects as needed

    QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

    Working towards a bachelor's degree and experience in youth education. A strong candidate will have a background in education, environmental science, biology, urban forestry, or urban studies and the ability to teach and engage students and connect them with the urban forest. All programs are off-site, and the position requires the environmental educator to travel to schools, after school sites, and gardens throughout the five boroughs. The environmental educator will have a strong interest in urban forestry and urban agriculture, the ability to work outdoors for extended periods, and work cooperatively with staff, teachers, and school administrators.
