Managing Director, The Actors’ Gang Theater
The Actors’ Gang (TAG) seeks a Managing Director (MD) with demonstrated strong leadership skills and a passion for the arts and their impact on the community. The MD will guide the development of a vision and strategy for TAG’s growth. The MD and Artistic Director are jointly charged with enabling TAG to realize its goals for artistic excellence, community service, education, audience engagement, financial stability, and fundraising. Within this collaborative partnership, the MD is responsible for rendering the Artistic Director’s vision into practicable initiatives that are financially sound and supported, and which galvanize the board, staff, and extended community behind it.
The ideal candidate knows how to design and execute development plans in the short, intermediate, and long-term to help TAG grow. The candidate must be a clear communicator with the ability to establish long-lasting, productive relationships with the Board, staff and community of patrons. We are looking for a talented individual who can work within the long-established dynamic TAG culture, but brings process and rigor to the role. Financial stewardship is key to success - the ideal candidate has demonstrated ability to generate income from programming as well as philanthropic support, and has a passion for organizational development.
Responsibilities: The overall business, administrative, and operational management of the company. This includes leadership of staffing, supervise and coordinate with HR Director, fundraising, budgeting, financial management, information systems, institutional marketing, and board relations. The MD role reports directly to the Founding Artistic Director and the Board of Directors, and collaborates with the theater’s staff in developing and executing the wide-ranging activity of TAG. The MD is also responsible for managing the individuals involved in the Prison Project and the Actors’ Gang Education Department to deliver against their missions of bringing theater to those who would otherwise have no access.
Administration: The Managing Director is responsible for overseeing financial and facilities management, development, strategic planning and community relations. The MD hires, coaches, and supervises staff, recruits and trains employees, actors and volunteer staff, and exercises responsible stewardship of resources. The MD collaborates with the Artistic Director to ensure the balance of artistic quality, financial strength, and institutional integrity.
Business Operations: The Managing Director supervises leadership for all departments including administration, development, education, facilities, marketing, prison project and patron services and provides input to each department. The Managing Director establishes, improves, and maintains efficient and cost-effective operations and internal/external communications for the organization, ensuring compliance with all theater policies, procedures and organizational bylaws; and manages key vendor relationships, including landlords, insurance providers, donors, and financial institutions.
Planning: The Managing Director works with the Artistic Director, the Marketing Director and TAG staff to create and execute long-term marketing and fundraising strategies.
Marketing, Communications: The MD oversees development and execution of quarterly and annual communications plans, including marketing and PR strategies for promoting productions, educational programs and the theater in general.
Financial Management: The MD works with the Artistic Director and Treasurer of the Board to develop annual budgets to support the organization’s programmatic and institutional priorities.

Board of Directors: The Managing Director serves as liaison to the Board of Directors and along with the Development Director and other executive staff, assists the Board’s leaders as appropriate with the recruitment, education and development of Board members and works with Board committees to engage the members in the service of TAG. Advocate: The Managing Director helps to advance the relationship between the theater and various local and regional organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, community and local business groups and arts organizations. The Managing Director/Artistic Director team presents the public face of The Actors’ Gang Theater and may be called upon to speak to private and public organizations and to the press.
External Relations
The MD represents TAG in the community, including cultivating donors, funding institutions, and government agencies.
Requirements
Education: BA required or equivalent experience.
