    FLSA: Salaried, Full-Time Exempt

    Work Location: Portland, Oregon. Hybrid.

    Compensation: $130,000 - $140,000 annually

    Friends of the Children - Portland is a non-profit that is breaking the cycle of generational poverty by giving youth facing the most obstacles the ability to create a new story. We do this by providing youth in our program with a long-term, paid, professional mentor, who we call a "Friend," from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12 ½ years - no matter what. Friends of the Children-Portland has been recognized in the Portland Business Journal as the Most Admired Nonprofit in Oregon for the past ten years.

    Position Overview

    The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads the fundraising efforts for Friends of the Children–Portland, working closely with the CEO to design and execute the organization's annual contributed revenue strategies. The CDO manages a team of 7-10 fundraising professionals to meet an annual fundraising goal of $7.1 million in the 2025 fiscal year. The CDO is a member of the organization's leadership team and works closely with the organization's Board of Directors, donors, staff, and volunteers.

    The ideal candidate will have significant experience in managing successful, comprehensive fundraising strategies with a focus on year-over-year growth.

    Key Responsibilities

    Fundraising and Relationship Development:

    • Develop and oversee a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure $7.1 million annually to support the work of Friends of the Children - Portland, through major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, and events.
    • Manage a portfolio of key donors ($25,000 and up) while overseeing the portfolios of frontline fundraisers.
    • Foster new donor relationships and partnerships, while strengthening and expanding current connections. Serve as a representative of the organization, building meaningful, long-lasting relationships with donors, partners, vendors, and contractors.
    • Serve as liaison for Board of Directors to identify and lead major gift efforts with key stakeholders.

    Development Team Management:

    • Retain, manage and cultivate a team of 7-10 development professionals, leading the team to meet annual fundraising goals.
    • Create and implement team and individual work plans, performance objectives, and goals.
    • Create, refine, and evaluate current fundraising systems to maximize efficiency and effectiveness within the department.

    Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

    • A successful track record of meeting and exceeding fundraising goals within organizations across the sector including higher education, healthcare, social services, and youth-focused nonprofits, or comparable experience.
    • Experience leading and managing a team of fundraising professionals, demonstrating effective management, empathy, accountability, and collaboration.
    • Demonstrated success as a frontline fundraiser with experience cultivating, soliciting and closing 6-figure major gifts.
    • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and racial justice within a team, organization, or community.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with staff, donors, board members, and other stakeholders.
