    Description

    The Preserve Steward will perform general monitoring and basic maintenance at SVT's Walkup & Robinson property in Westborough.

    Responsibilities:
    • Walk trails and look for and note problems with trail passage, vandalism, illegal uses, etc. (For properties without trails, walk roadside and property perimeter.) 
    • Remove trash and debris.
    • Notify SVT staff of urgent problems and situations.
    • Monthly restock map brochures and membership brochures. Maximum of 25 maps/month. 
    • Monitor kiosk content to ensure it is up to date and in good condition.
    • Maintain trail signage. (Staff assistance provided as needed).
    • Perform basic trail maintenance such as cutting back brush and tree limbs. Monitor condition of bridges. Clean out and maintain water bars.
    • Monitor reservation boundaries annually during spring or fall. Check for encroachments. If time and interest allow, monitoring boundaries more frequently is encouraged. Either once each in spring, summer, and fall OR once in late spring and once in fall.
    • Submit visitation reports on the SVT web site’s stewardship volunteer log. 
    Optional Responsibilities:
    • Assist staff with field work, which may include property surveys, boundary signage, trail maintenance, inventories, etc. 
    • Observe wildlife and changes in plant communities. 
    • Document plant and animal sightings. 
    Volunteer Qualifications: 
    • Willing to “adopt” the property and gain a thorough knowledge and appreciation of it. 
    • Able to visit property at least monthly throughout the year. 
    • Physically able to walk extensively and perform some manual labor.
    • Enjoyment of the outdoors and commitment to conservation.
    Training/Orientation Provided: 

    An individual orientation and training session will be provided to introduce the volunteer to the property and its associated responsibilities. 

    Time commitment (hours, dates, duration): 

    Variable (4 – 10 hours/month). Can be flexible to your schedule.

    Directions

    From Route 9W take the exit for Computer Drive. Turn left at the light onto Computer Drive and follow the right lane as it crosses over Route 9. At the next light, go straight for 0.5 mile. Turn left on Friberg Parkway and go 0.25 mile to the Walkup driveway entrance on the right. After turning, bear left to the parking area.
