Nepal Earthquake Relief: Rebuild a School

Are you passionate about education and making a difference for disaster-impacted communities around the world? Volunteer with All Hands and Hearts (AHAH) in Nepal from December 16, 2024 to April 25, 2025, to rebuild a disaster-impacted school!

Who is All Hands and Hearts?

AHAH provides community-inspired, volunteer-powered disaster relief to global communities. When a disaster strikes, we arrive early and stay late to support those affected and work alongside community leaders to identify immediate and long-term needs. In nearly 20 years of relief work, we have mobilized 66,000 volunteers to over 179 programs, impacting 1.4 million lives worldwide.

Where is this program located?

This upcoming program is located in Bagmati Rural Municipality, in Makwanpur District, a beautiful rural area outside of Kathmandu. Nestled in the Himalayas, the area boasts a warm, vibrant community and is rich with historic sites. In April 2015, the people of Bagmati and the rest of the country were heavily impacted by two major earthquakes. The 7.8 and 7.3 magnitude quakes hit within weeks of each other, damaging or completely destroying schools, buildings and homes. More than 8,000 schools were damaged or completely destroyed. To this day, many communities across Nepal are still picking up the pieces from this devastating event, with students continuing to face unsafe learning conditions in fragile, vulnerable infrastructure.

What would this program provide for the community?

We will rebuild a disaster-resilient school using sustainable building techniques, addressing the unsafe learning conditions faced by students and staff for almost a decade since the 2015 earthquakes. Our work will include rebuilding three disaster-resilient classrooms, providing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, constructing a playground and coordinating community trainings and workshops.

What does the volunteer work consist of?

Volunteer work will depend on when you arrive and where the team is on the stage of construction they are in, but can include backfilling soil, concrete pouring, hand mixing mortar, bricklaying, heavy lifting, rebar/wood cutting & installation, painting and playground design.

All Hands and Hearts guarantees no fees when joining us on program. There is no minimum time commitment and we provide group living accommodation and free breakfast, lunch and dinner on volunteer days.
